I'm sure someone will know the answer to this one.

We have friends arriving on Friday. They are flying with Turkish Airlines from Stanstead on flight TK1972 to Istanbul and then on to Ercan on flight TK1264. They have an hours wait in Istanbul and I wondered if they will be sitting on the tarmac for an hour or do they have to change planes on this particular flight? If they have to change planes, is it necessary for them to buy a visa?

They depart on 3 November on flight TK1261 and fly to Stansread on TK1971. Do they have to change plabnes on this flight?

It is their first visit to TRNC and I want to let them know the routine.

As far as I can gather it depends on the mood of Turkish airlines and the authorities - there seems not to be a definitive yes or no.

There is no need for them to obtain a visa as they are only transit passengers. I came back to Ercan via Istanbul from Manchester last Sunday, with only a one hour wait for the onward flight to Ercan. Unfortunately the flight from Manchester was delayed by about one hour so we missed the connection and had to wait for 5 hours for the next flight. I hope your friends have better luck.

If any visa is required, payment will be at the airport. Was £10 but it might have changed due to plummeting pound. Tom will know!

Yes, they do have to change planes. on both flights.

I was on those fight numbers recently.

Tell them to go straight to their next gate on the screens (sometimes the pilot states all the gate numbers and gets it wrong). One hour is not long. No visa required.

Richard thank you for the vote of confidence - At present if you enter Turkey and you are a UK British Passport Holder you are charged £10.00 If you are not entering Turkey but only going through transit in Ataturk airport you are not charged for a visa. (The rules can vary with countries regarding transit.)

Providing the tickets were purchased from Turkish Airlines stating Stanstead/Istanbul/Ercan then there is no problem. Change of planes but as transit passengers. One hour is enough time for Istanbul transit, aout 500 yards between gates. We have travelled from Manchester to Ercan on Turkish Airlines quite a few times and never had any problems with flights, transfers and indeed service.

I've been on this service a couple of times and it shows everywhere as a separate flight as TK need to keep their international reputation and not show directs flight to ECN with a stop. Even the flight crew on the STN/IST leg don't know, but on each occasion there has been an announcement as you land that passengers for ECN should remain on board - very garbled usually, but you can see the regular travellers who just stay in their seats, check with them!

Thanks everyone for your help. I think I'll just tell them that they may have to change at Istanbul as it seems the airline make their mind up on the day!

Sorry, didn't mean to post twice and it really isn't my fault. I'm with Sunnycyprus too and there was a blip as I was posting!
