Private Eye no. 1248 reports a visit in late September to Kibris newspaper by our dearly beloved top government official Peter Millett.

Kibris reported Millett's interview with executives of the newspaper, whose owner of course is Asil Nadir who was not mentioned in the report, but I cannot see him not being there.

What I would like to know is why this interview was NOT reported in any English language newspaper, especially Cypyus Today which is sister paper to Kibris. Perhaps they think that a meeting between the British Government and a person on the run from it is of no interest to the British.

It seems to me that Millett came here specifically to meet Nadir, otherwise any other sort of business Millett might have with Kibris could be done by way of a press release.

I wonder what is going on that is being kept from us.

Does nobody, other than myself, find this report disturbing?

Exnavalperson, why do you think The Sun is the best-selling newspaper in the UK?

mmmmmm - neither disturbing or 'rich'. Many ex-pats I know, knew about this. Millet is a Grecophile who tells me he has a villa in Athens and is learning Greek but has no time to learn Turkish. He isn't paid to think - he's a glorified messenger boy.

Dear Dutch

I am old and tired, so will you explain what the "Sun" has to do with it? I cannot work it out.

Dear Cornish

You are quite correct. Although he is the Queens representative, I am sure that she did not show the bad taste in choosing him personally!

Dear Ex Naval

I read Dutch's post to be a sniping comment on the intelligence and or the interests of the British in general and those on this board specifically as an explanation as to why your topic had not generated more interest.

If I missed the point, I am sure Dutch will correct me.

Yes, that is the point. Why did Millett semi-secretly sneak over to the TRNC if not to meet Asil Nadir? My belief is that he was instructed to. I wonder what they said to each other!

If the interview that he gave was published, how can that be 'semi-secret' ?? Has anyone got any proof that he met Nadir ??? Conspiracy theories abound.

Even if he did meet Nadir, it wouldn't be the first time that Govt representatives have met with 'alleged' criminals.....McGuinness, Gaddafi, Saddam, Mugabe...the list goes on and on and on and on......

Regards

Paul

=> Harold, you're a wise and understanding man. But don't underestimate this exnavalperson! I consider him to be a friend of mine and I'm sure his remark was provocative: he wanted *me* to explain, wanted me to do the dirty work... Fortunately you, Harold, wrote it in better English than I could do it. So this problem has been solved in a very satisfying way. Thank you!

Dutch

I am glad we have clarified your views of the majority of British people based it appears on a popular newspaper, however should we likewise base our view on the Dutch from the fact that Endemol, the originators of Big Brother, are a Dutch company? I would hope not!

Dutch (message 12) Boy, how you can wriggle, especially as English is not your native tongue! (compliment)

Harold 2555 (message 14) May I correct you please?. PE is not a "popular newspaper" it is a magazine printed once a fortnight and is far more accurate than any newspaper that you will ever read. The comments I made on its' accurate article are strictly my own interpretation.
