I have narrowed the choice down to 3, Altinkaya, Pia Bella & Oscars Resort. I've looked at all the individual websites and all the reviews but am still a little undecided. The main problem to ensure that I get it exatly right is that I am travelling with an older person who has walking difficulties so have to make sure that there is at least a lift or not too many stairs. Also would like restaurants, shops within a reasonable distance. The Altinkaya mentions a roof top restaurant & I wondered if that would be a problem.

Would welcome any advice or tips on these hotels or indeed any others that folks think may be suitable.

Hi there Holly,

Hubby and I stayed at the Altinkays 2 years ago, it is not suitable for anyone old or infirm. I would recommend the Ship Inn, ground floor room and staff can't do enough to accomodate you. This hotel is spotlessly clean with no dust under the beds as has happened in some of the hotels we have stayed in.

All are good Hotels but for my choice, The Pia Bella pips it, I have many happy clients that I book into there and can honestly say that I have never had a complaint. Click on the tab above for prices/availability.

we stopped at the altinkaya in may. the only problem was if you go half board your meal is a set meal and it wasn't to our liking half the time. but they do have a menu and if you tell them soon enough they will cook you anything you want. other than that it is a lovely hotel. we have had some friends stay in the oscars and they enjoyed that too.

Why not try the Dome. It is right in the centre of town with lots of restaurants nearby. There is also a lift in the hotel.

I was only going to do B&B for that very reason. Is the only restaurant on the rooftop?

Holly,

You will never need to eat in the Hotel Restaurant, whichever hotel you choose.

There are so many good indipendant restaurants.

The rooms at the Pia Bella which have the neons above the Balconies, are all used solely by the casino staff, and not hotel guests.

Hi holly,

just returned from pia bella stayed there 3times so far each time B-B they have a ground floor restaurant lifts to all floors, they cannot do enough for you, not been dissapointed so far going back again in october, ask them for free upgrade to the annex might be a bit better for your companion bit quieter, ray.

Thanks for all your suggestions they have been helpful. Almost decided now that it will be The Dome. Discounted this in the beginning, and I can't remember why now, but seems the best to suit our circumstances. See you there.

The Dome, previously controlled by the Vakiflar Foundation, is now being run by the staff from what I can gather, so you would be supporting a good way of running a business in the TRNC, and of course one of the oldest hotels in Girne. Decor bit dated (lots of pastels!), but I sometimes pop in for a drink or two and think its a nice laid back place. Good for you if you stay there!

hi, we have stayed at the Dome twice this year. Rooms are a bit tired but bar and restaurant (for breakfast) were very nice. We stayed on the ground floor (room 110) fantastic position, room overhangs the sea. Downside was that the people leaving the casino in the early hours were a bit noisy.

The Malpas is a smart hotel, and well worth considering. If you would like half board but don't want to pay for it, go to Cyprus 44's sister website at http://www.kyreniahotels.co.uk . Book the Malpas and you'll get a FREE upgrade to half board - bargain!

Hi Holly

If you are not considering a rental property, i can strongly recommend the Ship Hotel in Karaoglanoglu and the Hotel Pia Bella in Girne both are in walking distance to shops and have an excellent reputation.

Now you've all got me thinking again! What is the walking distance to shops and restaurants from the Pia Bella or the Ship? I was told that the Pia Bella was in "walking distance" - about a mile which is nothing to me, but to my mother is an impossibility. Don't want to be getting taxis all the time although I understand don't cost very much. Money (within reason) is not the issue.

Ship is certainly walkable, but around maybe 40 mins depending on your speed! Its on main road though, so you can get the 'dolmus' no probs. Pia Bella is a safer bet as its only around 10-15 mins walk into centre of town. Dome Hotel though is IN centre of town and by the sea! Perfect.

Also maybe you might want to think about whether you want to be around around so many Brits at the Pia Bella - mainly there to buy property most of the time - just a thought!

Holly your right the Dome is the perfect location, however stairs will be an obstacle, please try the Ship Inn, you can get a ground floor mezanine villa/studio and your Mum will have a fantastic time, Taxi's will not be an issue.

Yes the Dome does have lifts and for somebody with limited mobility you simply cannot get a better location. The Ship is near shops but these are mostly furniture shops. Not that interesting unless you have a house and are looking to furnish it!! The other good thing about the Dome is that evening entertainment is geared towards an older audience and there will be plenty of people of a similar age group for your companion to get to know if they wish.

I wonder if anyone out there has recently stayed in Oscars Resort? We have an apartment in Lapta, but some of my family (5 adults and 4 children) are coming out to stay in Oscars in August. I have read some very good and very bad reviews??

Also any ideas about where to eat out with children? As we are in Lapta we have been to Kyrenia harbour a few times but not to eat as it did not really seem the place for children?

Any ideas on where to take them would be appreciated.

can't really comment on Oscars - some love it, some think its awful - bit out of the way if you are Lapta and they are there! Check this thread, as it was discussed a while ago about restaurants for kids - lots on there for you!

It's still going to be the Dome hopefully but have had to pospone booking for a week or two due to illness. Hope I can still get the flights I want that are at a decent time of day.
