When we flew home for Xmas, went to the Hertz office to pick the keys up for the car,

asked for driving licence's,produced our plastic ones to be told that we needed the paper version as well.

Now i have to ask who carries both with them, they told us that they could phone DVLA at a cost of £5 each to check

that we had no driving convictions, but if we had arrived after 5.00pm they could not have hired us a car because the phones would not have been answered. I then asked if we could use our TRNC driving licences

and was told yes,we don't need to check those so it is wise to carry both when travelling

Iv'e just renewed my photocard licence , when it was returned , an accompanying leaflet said that the photocard licence and paper licence should be kept together, is it wise ??? i wouldn't have thought so .

I hire a car every time I go back to england with various companies and they all ask for the paper copy. So Hertz are no different.

jardap,

sorry to see you did not read the terms and conditions of your booking.

Hertz, like all hire car companies have had this condition for the 5 years I have been hiring from them.

I did ask, what happens if and the answer is you wait while they contact DVLC. If it is over night or week end you are stuffed.

Simbas, no not a good idea in my opinion either. However that is the law and technically you could be prosecuted if stopped and do not present to the officer. From my knowledge you usually get 7 days to produce same at police station.

I do know that all UK. car hire companies accept the TRNC DL or they did when I was last there. I only have a UK. Paper licence. I never bothered with the photocard version. Is it still not obligatory??

Hi Jardap we had the same problem at stanstead, then discovered that guidos phot licence had expired 2 days beforehand. I had my licence on me together, so i had to rent the car in my name. Guido had booked it online and as i hadnt had to pay a higher price and large deposit. Spend 2 days at the dvla to get it sorted xx

the dvla do not issue the paper licence any longer so they are advising the members of the public to exchange for a photo licence, but the old licence still legal.

That's good to know. Not having a plastic UK. one means not having to keep getting the thing updated. I'm so glad I never bothered.

The old paper one is only legal if you reside at the address shown .. If not then you are breaking the law ..

Just to let you know that the car hire company I use in U.K also DEMANDS the paper licence.

It is also good to have the (correclty named by someone) counterpart licence with you, because IF you happen to break the law and get a speeding fine, you have to take both to the police to pay the fine.

Daft law, but as someone said, it IS the Law. Don't know what idiot thought it up, but they are obviously more important than the rest of us, so until the system is changed, don't throw away that essential back up piece of paper and when visiting U.K make sure you take it with you.

The back up paper licence is the one that records any penalties, fines etc .. Can't put them on the plastic .. Just maybe the hire company want to know of drink driving offences & any other bad risks ..

After having 20 years in the vehicle hire bussiness up to 2007 ,it always was the and still is as far as I am aware .that the only document that is your licence is the paper part the plastic ID card is an entititlement to drive .All insurers of self drive hire companies insist on the paper licence being seen and recorded with any convictions if the licence was not available most insurers would allow confirmation through DVLA but only if the driver was present to speak to them first They were, at least upto 2007, open on a special premium rate number until 20.00hrs this number was only available to hire companies but hire companies still had to take a secondary means of ID not a debit or credit card .Unless things have changed dramatically in the last 2 years I think you will find that paper licences are stll issued together with the plastic ID and the £5.00 charged by any hire company was to cover the premium rate phone call

Thanks for your comments Scootex. Would you say that things have recently changed? Guido in msg. 12 seems to be suggesting that the paper DL has now gone? However it's obvious that you cannot record driving convictions on a plastic card.

scruff,

From my experience, the 30 year old piece of paper is valid but if you send off for a replacement, change of address etc you will automatically get a plastic one, with the associated piece of paper. DOOHHHHH! you still need to carry both.

Talking of 30 yearold pieces of paper I still have my little red book driving licence and my original green DVLA licence and heres one for the quiz night fanatics did you know that the DVLA have issued at the last count when I was in the trade 8 different formats be for they got to the plastic card and paper licence and any body who throw the paper part away don't worry you are in the company of 100's of drivers who did the same but please don't try to con the hire companies by saying you did nt receive it as you will look really foolish as the DVLA all ways send both parts

When I have booked a car for North Cyprus I am always reminded to bring over both parts of the licence.
