hi everyone

my first post . we are renting a villa in Alagadi end of July for 2 weeks and are really looking forward to it as we have never been to Cyprus before. Can anyone recommend a few local restaurants /bars .We are apparently 50 yards from St Kathereens . Ive found a couple of references to this and they have been favourable but does anyone know it , and are there any others nearby (walking distance if poss although we will be hireing a car for some of our stay) . Also any other info such as distance to shops/supermarkets and the best beaches. The main Algadi beach sounds beautiful but my sister in law who is coming with us enjoys a sunbed etc. is Laras beach anygood? Any info would be greately appreciated

You will need the car.

Although there is a restaurant in Alagadi, for best choices you will have to drive 25 minutes into Girne, or choose one of the several that are en-route. For Supermarket shopping you have a 15 minute drive to Supreme Supermarket.

You are practically on the beach with just a short walk to the sands where they have the usual kiosk and sunbed hire.

Alagadi beach is one of the few beaches where turtles nest. At the end of July you should catch the last of the nesting and the first of the hatching. The HQ of the researchers is in the village, so pop in and see them.

great choice of locations !

You're Just down the road from the power station so a nice whiff of diesel in the air, plus when you drive into Girne, you'll be able to see loads of bulders rubble dumped everywhere, the high light being the 100 or so lorry loads dumped opp the power station........

Brings a whole new meaning to "unspoilt Metiterrianian paradise"....

Alagadi beach is beautiful - but unfortunately its strewn with litter and packed at weekends cos its free - the only way to get a litter free beach is to pay, i'm afraid....

The Govt have done little to make things attractive to tourists, no real attempt to build any infrastructure like other countries have (planted some palm trees here and there but no one watered them so most now dead...)....

The best feature is Girne Harbour, but you'll be mithered to death by waiters touting for business and selling over priced drinks and 2nd rate food.....

"yow'll learn" as me old uncle Percy used to say....

The ARSEHOLE negative nick/John Wayne does not live on this Island and finds Pataya a more attractive place.

Nick/John

Why dont you keep you mouth shut for a change and let people enjoy this place, I think it says something about you that you are in Thailand and have nothing better to do than try and spoil what other people like about it here. Go and get yourself a he/she and have a night in.

Typical!!!

A first time poster comes to this forum for help and information and you end up squabbling like little children. Really helpful?

It would have thought it nice for a new poster to see peoples opinions (with out the arguing) and they can make their own mind up..

So back to the thread and some helpful advice please.

I know its the truth. Rubbish scattered around is apparently the No.1 complaint of tourists.

There are others too and I for one don't mind the 'ups and downs' being listied but lets do it without the bickering in an attempt to help the person putting the question.

There you see, you've got me going on and on, off topic.

Alagadi is a good choice. It is a good beach and I understand that you can get loungers there. I don't know about Laras beach.

As stated in an earlier post Alagadi is also the location for the HQ of the Turtle Conservationists and you should give them a visit. Turtle nesting happens during June / July and hatching around middle July to September so you should be able to see some of occuring.

If you have the time make sure to visit the Karpaz end of the north. Alot quieter, uncluttered (as yet) scenery and wide, empty beaches - although some will be busier because of being high season. For more info on the area go to http://www.karpazinfo.net

Hi Yosaria- Beno's restaurant, signposted down towards the turtle project at Alagardi is lovely family run eatery - you'll be warmly met and happily fed - Id recommend the swordfish - my kids love it too - Beno made them swordfish kebabs - yummmy. Enjoy your stay - ignore the negative comments - find out for your self. - there's good and bad everywhere you go in this world but I can guarantee you wont be disappointed by the friendliness of the locals. Enjoy xx

other countrys employ people to clean up the rubbish ,unfortunatly trnc does not have this infrastructure yet as and when the tourist industry grows , more money will be available to implement this , no point coming on here slagging the place off , if you dont like it you dont have to go , to many negatives from supposed lovers of the place . more negatives , less tourists , wise up ???

Let's have some positives.

Alagadi is a great beach.

A chance to see the turtles and learn about them at The Goatshed

Local restaurants are all family run, friendly and pretty good value.

Benos is good, have known it from day one. Kathleens is not as I used to live it as it has got bigger and the road runs round the back, but they area lovely family and made you welcome.

Couple of other restaurants on the same road

So, Kyrenia is more for sight seeing and souvenirs, I reckon.

Golf course not to far if you like that kind of things.

AND DON'T FORGET THE BEACH GETS CLEANED UP FOR THE TURTLES - schoolkids do it and so do locals, so any visitors benefit from the clean up. You could be inluck in July!

Wonderful views of mountains and a drive through the 'real Cyprus' . Drive on to Kantara Castle and up to Buffavento the other way. Cut across to Salamis for a day aout - great beaches, and go on down to Bogaz.

Lots to do and enjoy - just look up at the stars and not at the mud! ENJO

yosarian - Alagadi is a lovely place to stay and explore the island.

There is a restaurant close to St Katleens called Benoz and you must give it a go! It is run by a lovely family and their children and they do a fantastic meze. I can also recommend the sword fish and very reasonable prices. Lots of other nice restaurants around with in a few minutes drive- you will have a great time!

Enjoy!!!

Thanks everyone for the tips. Benos sounds just the sort of place we like. I'm sorry to have started so much agro. I really dont mind a bit of rubbish on the beaches and I shall certainly be looking out for the baby turtles.

Really looking forward to July

O.K Yosarian. Do get in touch when over. /Would love to meet! As to the rubbish, I have experienced that inThailand, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka and south America. None of it detracted from the magic of the places. I am sure you will discover that in Cyprus too.

Keep warm until July when you will get all the heat you can handle!

Hi Yosarian, I will apologise for some posters on this forum, they won't like this but I feel it necessary. Telling somebody who has booked a holiday, publicly that the place is equal to "crap" is crassness and indicates a mentality, where you are made to look small, and the poster exceptionally clever, which is unfortunately what happens a lot on this forum. Algadi is my nearest sandy beach, I visit there in the summer to swim quite often. The beach is not full of rubbish, and we sit on the sand which is clean, the car park leaves a lot to be desired, and during winter storms there is a fair amount of plastic washed up from the med.

Do hire a car, you will need one. Restaurants abound, many smaller bars have good food, many have music and it is actually difficult to find a bad meal. Visit Kyrenia, have coffee in the harbour and eat elsewhere as we do.

I hope you have a really good holiday, I live here full time, England it 'aint, Cyprus it is
