Hi Captain John, just wondered if you can put me in the right direction being a sea fairing type, I am hoping to get qualified within the next year to charter a sailing yacht, are their any schools/ training authorities in NC where I could take a course? and are you aware of anybody/company that does yacht charter in NC ? If I buy a yacht abroad and bring it to NC would it be liable for import duty? any info greatly appriciated.
With Thanks

Hi Dixie, I doubt if there is any sail training school here. There is a dinghy sailing school, thats all I have heard off. There are very few yachts here. We wanted to buy one, but there were none available at a realistic price. If you bring one into the country you will have to pay duty, that I think is fairly high. Then you need a mooring. The only deep water moorings are in the new & old harbours in Kyrenia & there is a long waiting list. Also you are always on a lee shore here. In the end we brought a small speed boat, which we keep in a small fishing harbour.

try RYA (Royal Yachting Association) web site ,nothing in TRNC but I would think that the south would be you best bet.
let me know how you get on, maybe we could have a beer when you are over
Good luck

I have booked the Karrabacha for 26th August which departs from Girne Harbour. There may room for 1 or 2 more people since we generally keep the numbers low because we are fishing for Tuna. E mail me if anybody is interested

Hi Captain,
Might need your services sometime in October. There are only 4 of us definates at the moment but should be able to get the 7 ok. We will be at Kyrenia, can you please give us some info on where to pick you up? how long is the trip for? What type of fish we can expect to catch, if any? And of course how much this is going to cost us. Many Thanks.

I tried to find Captain John at Esentepe Marina when I was out a couple of weeks back because someone told me he sails from there, but when I got to the Esentepe area I was told the Marina is not even built yet. I gave up and went to Girne with Captain Musa.

Any how the Dolunay will stay in my mind for years to come after some memorable and personal service the experience was great and I would reccommend it to anybody

Punk we drove round looking for Captain John's boat and eventually found Esentepe Harbour after driving off road for a while - great little harbour and we think we found his boat but no-one was around only the guy in the hut watching for forest fires - he didnt speak much English and when we mentioned Captain John he just shrugged his shoulders. Shame because they wanted to go out with him.

Not me. I nearly ran out of petrol looking.
Note to Punk Rocker, no plug for Musa (spent 200 YTL between two of us and caught jack sh*t). Simply offering another contact should I have chosen a duff day, or maybe the fish were on Ramadan.

Esentepe harbour is a small traditional harbour, it can be accessed by travelling east past poppin bar & restaurant till you get to the Medview complex, directly opposite the east end of the Medview complex there is a dirt road which takes you down to the harbour, the road whilst unmade is reasonably ok for cars to go on, Captain John can be contacted thru the Esentepe hotel - Poppin - Kings bar - Moulos inn - Glencoe trading and a few other places as well, hope this all helps

There is dinghy sailing in the TRNC and has been for the last 25 years. Please phone Chris on 8156125. We have had a registered company for all that time, and now Chris is the Sailing Coach for the country, having been a former RYA coach /assessor.

Hello Steve,
As you are probably aware I live in Chelsey Village. I am also a keen fisherman
with fairly extensive knowledge of fishing in the South (where I moved from).
Max fish size is about 35 lbs (Carp). Pleasure fishing in summer normally returns 100-200 fish (small carp, roach and catfish channel cats - not weals). There is every chance of a 2lb roach at the right venue (suggest Kalavasos). This has been a bad year. Spoke with fisheries only yesterday about re-stocking - they are not going to do any. Instead they are going to close dams to fishing (stupid statement - they are empty) until the stocks improve.
Although there is a lovely dam in view of my veranda - I have never fished it (I believe there is currently a ban with the current water shortage). I have seen locals catch (and take) small carp from there.
No pike about - but there are zander and wide mouth bass.
regards,
Mick
