I was told by Bayram, just before his unfortunate episode with fuel delivery, that this winter was the end of, what had in effect been, a drought lasting 80 years... i.e. 1930 was he last time rain of such proportions and steadiness had fallen.

In the past when rain fall measures had been as good the rain had come in such floods the vast amority ran off into the sea without filling the reservoirs sufficiently.

He thought that although we all ought to be careful with water the austerity measures the Belediye had to take would not be so hard this coming summer.

Quite right optimists are too often dissapointed but pessimists get pleasant surprises sometimes.

Would you believe, we`ve had no water for five days here in Karsiyaka. Went to the Belediyesi yesterday and they said they would fix it. Nothing. Hey ho, will have to have a tanker and wait till Monday.

It was continuous heavy rain like this that did the damage in Madeira!. I think they have a lot more top soil than we do.

My neighbour keeps trying to build a new wall, and not exagerating it must be about 20 ft high, as it is about 12 ft from our drive up to his drive (steep hill) and then another 6 to 8 ft on top of that. Well he knocked the old wall down and built a nice new one a couple of months ago, and when we had the heavy rain a month ago part of it fell down. So he built it again in double quick time and it was finished last week. Unfortunately he will have to build it again, as it is now lying in a wonderful mess all across our drive, and we are stuck the wrong side. Well our cars are. My neigbour is Cypriot by the way, so it wasn't workmers taking advantage of the English. I'm hoping he will know someone who can come out in the rain with a bulldozer to move it all., if not could someone send supplies in !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So much rain, pools are filling up, balance tanks full, pump rooms filling up too.

Just been out with submersible pump, to empty pump room before pump is covered,

1 down 2 to go.

It's times like this, I wish I was a duck )))

Have a nice day.

So it's still rain, rain ,rain and cold and I can't light a fire because the water comes down the chimney, then out goes the electric, naturally.Oh well at least I can boil some water, oh heck the gas is out. I try to go for some more gas but there is a torrent of water down my road. I'm soaked now but I've done my 1000 words for the day and I have a roof over my head. Maybe I'm not really a pessimist..yes. yes, it's not the UK, it's the middle east or somewhere like that. Don't tell me..I was bought up in the Sudan.. when aged 5 a packet of fruit polo's in the fridge was that years highlight. Oh and now my internet dongle is about to run out ..BYE! plink, plink plonk!

Tried to get to my gym in Kervasary this morning,no chance, the HSBC roundabout was like Niagara Falls and Kangerangeroo was virtually closed !!

Loads of Polis and fire and rescue trucks came down, looked, shrugged, then went back the same way !!!!

What was that all about then ????

Then a JCB from the bellydancers came down and was scooping the water off the road !!! Amazing carry on,I just sat and watched the farce....

Absolutely hammering it down here in Tatlisu but as you can tell so far we have electricity and enough signal to power up the old dongle (sounds a bit rude but I'm sure you know what I mean!) Makes for interesting watching the river flowing down the road and creating a nice little pathway through the fields at the side of the house, it's getting bigger by the hour but so long as it keeps passing us by I'm happy

I always wondered about what would happen when "normal" seasonal rains returned - those high unsupported slopes around AV must be crumbling away.

This all reminds me of a song from (was it?) Life of Brian, as our hero was in a veryuncomfortable (somewhat blasphemous) situation. Remember "Always look on the bright side of life."

Cypriot TV says some houses gone under the water at Karaoglanoglu. I have a horrid thought that maybe some owners have forgot their chained up dogs or maybe their enclosures have flooded along with them. Lots of roads have disintegrated in Town. I thought when they made new roads not long ago they put drainage system in?

I have just spoken to our neighbour in Karsiyaka

The ravine that borders our property has been dry since 2004 until earlier this year - today it is a fast flowing river.

Pity anybody whose house has been built in a ravine , or in the way of any natural drainage chanels

fingers crossed for everyone

Hi Dutch,

I was watching BRT on the computer(on the link I pasted) when they showed the floods and damage.

It was probably just the news section I saw.

Went on a long walk and the sudden appearance of waterfalls and fast running streams makes for quite a scenic mountain trek. Need good boots though now.

Go for a walk, just like the Lake District!! Beautiful scenery looking at the hills behind us in Catalkoy. I've put the canary out on the patio to warm up and am finally getting some washing done. All good fun. Would still rather be here.

Had to go and get the car taxed for the south yesterday, thought cause it's raining seemed a good day to do it, well, got back to Lefkosa and the mountain road closed, was directed along the main road to Ercan to find traffic coming along our lane, road flooded, turned around and thought we would try going Guzelyert way only to receive a phone call saying don't go that way it's bad, so headed off to Big M for some food asked them in there if they knew how we could get back to Catalkoy they said no after making a couple of phone calls, by this time we were getting a bit panniky and thought we might have to spend the night in the car. After some deliberation we headed back south along the motorway and went through Pyla crossing and finally arrived home about four hours later. What a day and just starting to do the clearup.

Corbo,

It isn't light rain in Catalkoy, it's bucketing it down again. I sure hope this does not put people off going out to the Pia Bella this afternoon because it sounds like it's going to be a fab do.

It's getting boring now this..rain and no electricity. Can't light a fire due to a wet chimney and my dongle has just about run out.

Hi Corbo,

Our chimney's dry, so put the pine cones, some paper & logs in the fire, lit it,

5 mins later all the smoke was blowing back into the room, due to strong winds outside.

Gloves on, threw all the wood out the window,

and poured water over the rest.

Had to open all the windows to let the smoke out :-(

Wife's still in bed, think I'll join her.

Here in Tatlisu we still have electric and internet access - as I keep saying you know where you are with a dongle!!!! It has been tipping it down but as we have a "spinner" on the chimney we don't have a problem with wet chimneys or wind (not sure that goes for my other half after a very large plate of calamari Took the chimney up 3 bricks and then put the spinner on top and we haven't had a problem since with smoke coming in the house. Can't see the mountains so were expecting another downpour any moment - am I pleased I got a small freezer I filled with homemade goodies so we don't have to venture out. Hope you all stay safe and warm

Just been out for supplies.

Side roads in a bad way, mud slides, tree washed down hillside to road,

water washing away support/gravel at the side of roads.

I think here's going to be a lot of roads closed or washed away from what I saw today :-(

We needed water on the Island, but not quite as much as we've had in the past few days.

Time for a film, but no fire, until wind dies down.

I don't suppose there is anyone looking in on the forum from the Yenierenkoy area is there?

I could do with an update from that area.

Husband just got back to Bahceli form the Pia bella, getting his drumkit set up ready for action at the Charity Gig later today. All roads are clear in spite of the recent bad weather on our side of Girne'.

Kind regards

Woo hoo, we've got a full moon out here at Tatlisu and clear skies! Just been out saying goodbye to a friend and it feels noticably warmer. I must admit we've been pretty lucky out this end of the island when we read the awful things that have happened in other places.

well the rains stopped but off goes the electricity again...5 hours this morning and off again now in Lapta. The wood fire is more entertaining than most of the repeat films tonight anyway! Ordered a 4th ton of wood to be delivered.

Well that's February 2010 gone,

and good riddance too.

What a lousy month that was for rain :-(

March must be better,

let's hope so.
