Is it very British to write hundreds of posts about the rain (yesterday) and nothing yet about this remarkable, glorious and wonderful morning full of sunshine..? (Going back to the terrace now, finish my coffee and cigarette, read on in my book - "Bonnie Prince Charlie, born to be King" - and go on wondering what moaning and whinging means...).

Hans. The British love talking about the weather. Wherever you are, whoever you meet, the weather willbe the first topic of conversation.

I can recall being on a tour to a rainforest. We met another English couple on the tour whom we had never met before. The first question the guy asked was "what's the weather like back home?"

Whether the weather be mild or whether the weather be not,

Whether the weather be cold or whether the weather be hot,

We'll weather the weather whatever the weather,

Whether we like it or not.

I think we were too busy, outside, coffee cup in hand, surveying our sodden 'gardens and wondering if it's worth emptying pump rooms, to be posting...

Well I mentioned the sun this morning on the rain rain and more rain thread. My glass is usually half empty so perhaps I'm not the typical Englishman abroad. Mind you my Mum was from Oz and my great grandfather on my Dads side from Ukraine. Is there such a thing as a typical English person?

I think it's pretty safe to say that talking about the weather isn't actually confined to just British people! I have been to many countries and conversations about the weather is quite predominant the world over!

Coversations about the weather are usually the easiest first conversations to have when talking to someone for the first time...a prelude to more interesting and worthy chats...ask any hairdresser!

Rain has stopped and we have woken up to a beautiful morning ... completely blue sky.

I think Hans may have a point though, there were lots of comments on several posts yesterday and today only a few have been able to defend the sunshine comments.

I suppose that would make you few Atypical ;-))

Dear Brits, the American company Apple Macintosh once told me, a customer, to "Think different!". I'd like you to "Think positive!". We are alive, live that life and enjoy every minute. Billions of dead people envy us from afar, day after day.

The weather, as a topic, is a neutral subject, so fairly safe to converse with a stranger.

I am surprised you are reading about Bonny Prince Charlie! (heir to the throne through the

male line) and all that!

"Billions of dead people envy us from afar, day after day."

Eh? you believe in an afterlife.... shock horror!

Hans,

If we put a post on each sunny day, you are going to get 330 threads on sunny weather per annum. I did post on the 'rain, rain, rain' thread that it was sunny so I'm obviously not British.

But more importantly well done on the medal haul in Vancouver, outstanding!

I for one am sick to death of the " British obsession " of discussing the bloody weather we look out of our window and can see its raining / sunny or whatever, yes I accept there are exceptional circumstances ie: floods / tsunamis but in Karsiyaka are we bothered that its raining in Manchester or its snowing in Essex.NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Bill,

I was commending the terrific medal haul of the Dutch.

With only the one on the slate (albeit a fantastic dominant performance getting a well deserved gold in the Women's Skeleton) I would not characterise our medal tally as a haul...

Our one gold is better than we achieved at the last winter olympics though Gavin.
