Istanbul Ataturk International Airport (IST)Worst-arrival rank: 3

On-time arrivals: 60.7%

At the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Istanbul’s airport saw nearly 29 million passengers in 2008, according to Airports Council International. But last year, most arrivals didn’t get there on time. According to FlightStats, 17% of all sampled passenger flights here arrived between 15 and 29 minutes late. More than 11% were late by at least 45 minutes.

London Stansted Airport (STN)Worst-arrival rank: 8

On-time arrivals: 66.7%

Stansted, Britain’s third-busiest airport, is a magnet for budget airlines. An airport spokesman disputes FlightStats’ figures, but adds that low-cost carriers typically have a quick turnaround time on the ground, which can increase the likelihood of a late flight. A FlightStats spokeswoman says the dispute over on-time arrivals is likely due to a different definition of “scheduled flights” in the U.K.

Istanbul Ataturk International Airport (IST)Worst-departure rank: 7

On-time departures: 58.2%

Istanbul Ataturk International is not close to being the world’s busiest airport. Still, it seems to have a problem with timeliness. The airport is one two major hubs to be mentioned on both our worst arrival and departure rankings this year. In 2009 about 57% of late passenger flights departed from Istanbul within a half hour of scheduled takeoff, according to FlightStats’ data sample.

Manchester Airport (MAN)Worst-departure rank: 8

On-time departures: 60%

For the second year in a row, Manchester Airport appears on our list of worst airports for timely departures. The good news: It dropped from second place to eighth. At the busiest airport in Northern England, most late departures were delayed by only 15 to 29 minutes, according to FlightStats’ sampling of data.
