Re-Msg.4

Suzi - the turtles here start laying their eggs end of May / start of June...

You can go down to see them laying with the volunteers at Alagadi - they normally start taking people down in June.

Really really worth it if you can go - there really is nothing like it.

Robin will probably be updating the website soon... but volunteers don't start arrving until mid May so I imagine it will be nearer then. He'll most likeiy get back to Groucho soon with full details though

I've had a reply from Robin - nothing will be changed until late May and the website may keep the same name or the 09 changed to 10. Someone will post the details at that time.

I am really excited about the prospect of seeing the turtles laying .... it was wonderful seeing the babies scurrying to the sea last August. Is there any mileage in having a Cyprus44 beach clean? It would make a good get together opportunity and do something for the environment at the same time. We could take a picnic and a few beers ... and take all our rubbish home!

The Turtle project would really appreciate it. Late May is a good time - Turkcell used to organise them involving children from the local schools, not quite sure what happened last year.

Once the season starts, you need to go to their HQ, the Goat Shed at Alagadi, and place your name on a list. Numbers are limited, and the lists fill quickly, so it's best to do it a few days before you want to want to watch them.

We really could do with more people prepared to do the "dirty work" as well, the beaches are a real mess to claen up,let alone watch the turtles laying eggs....

Anyone up for it ????

Please come and help us Sloan !!!

It's not pretty, but it is very rewarding as we sometimes are able to educate the youngsters who may then educate their parents about litter..

If enough people turn up and the beaches are walked in a methodical manner it takes no more than one to two hours tops...

Followed by a cool drink with some mates... what could be better? (OK I know, but I can't get Beyonce to turn up!)

Hi Sloan, what a lovely idea. Perhaps it could be mentioned at the 44 get together at Guidos today. We are moving over in a couple of weeks so will come along if someone organises it.

Would like to keep this thread current as it should be nearing the time we need to clean up beaches etc.

I want to remain in the loop. Nine more days and we arrive and look forward to volunteering and participating. Also, I have found several websites regarding environmental projects but they all seem to be dead projects as the most current dates are 2008 -earlier.

Please feel free to contact me with any other clean-up/environmental programs and projects.

Hi all...

Not sure if Robin got back to Groucho yet? I forgot to ask! Will check on thrusday when see him.

There is very likely going to be a beach clean at Alagadi but probably not until mid May, and I'll make sure once a date (or dates!) are set it will get put up on here. The blog will also likely be going up around this time.

Out of interest would people be interested in doing a beach clean more than once over the turtle season? May be something like once a month?? Will discuss with Robin but thought would find out if people were up for this. After a single busy weekend - in addition to what washes up from elsewhere - the beach can be back to being full of litter again. It's not nice for turtles or the volunteers crawling about after them in the dark!

I'm involved in the Karsiyaka Turtle watch this year again and we to will likely be doing a beach clean - so will let you all know about that one to, especially people at west end of Kyrenia

Come on aylin - Tricia is incharge of fundraising for SPOT, I am seeing her tomorrow evening and will mention what you would like to do. We may actually need help on the Lambosa store on Saturday mornings - again I will find out and get back to you if you would be interested in that to? - Same for anyone else interested to.

Molly Corbin - Will keep you updated about any other environmental stuff I here about. I may have some stuff coming up that I could use some help with but I've just started the project so is a little way off yet.

If there's anything else people want to get involved in, or have ideas, just want to help or want to find out more about turtles just ask away and I'll try help, or defer to Robin and Trish as needed. We are always on the search for raffle prizes etc. so ideas/suggestions always welcome

Hope I've helped - will check back when I next get chance

Hi Andrea,

Don't worry I'm not going off doing my own thing. I've been involved with SPOT fund raising with Tricia since 2005. I help run the stall at Carpenter's on Fridays during the Summer. We (Groucho and I) have also run the stall at St. Andrew's fete and Ozankoy Flower show for past 2 years.

We plan to run a stall at both events this year and probably start the stall at Carpenter's on or soon after 7th May.

Just to mention last year we did a beach clean every Monday at 5pm at Alagadi Beach. You can go to the goat shed and check with Robin when they are doing the beach clean.

I will be over for 4 weeks from 4th June and if you need an underwater 'beach' clean I would be happy to assist (although I would need support from one of the dive centres).

When do the turtles hatch? My two grandchildren will be with me until 5th August and would love to see them. I have been told you can at Karsiyaka beach, is this correct?

I scuba dive at least three days a week with Cengiz at North Cyprus British Scuba, and every time we go in if we see rubbish we all carry rubbish nets and clear it all up under the water to stop it appearing on the beaches and protect marine life, we also do a beach clean up every year around september time at a different location each time cleaning the beach and under the water.

Some times on the underwater rubbish cleans we collect at least one bag each you will be amazed at how much is under there.

The project won't be open to the public until beginning of June (The students come end May and spend a while being given instruction and orientation)

I'm told someone called Kim will be Project Leader (Robin Snape is doing his PHD but will be keeping a watch over the project too) Please note Robin will be particularly interested in any Turtles discovered as I understand his PHD is partly focused on cause and effect re Turtle mortality.

You are not able to book for overnight Turtle egg-laying observation until it's set up, then go down to Book at Project (Alagadi). We will let you know when they are ready to take bookings.

The Turtle BLOG will be running, again we will let you know when it's up and provide a link.

Lastly, the Turtle project fund raiser stall will be at the Ozankoy Flower Show this weekend and we have lots of new turtle related goodies to sell and raise funds for the project. So come along and see what we've got.

Groucho please, where is the goat shed where you eventually need to register to attend the turtle laying event?

Alagadi beach,is it the long sandy beach with just one beach bar or the other turn off with residences and several restaurants?

What time does the flower show in Ozankoy start? Thanks Lyn

For details of the flower show...

http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/36172.asp

The goat shed directions:-

Head out on the Esentepe/Bahceli/Tatlisu road from Girne (heading east). When you've passed the Teknicek Electricity Power Station you go around a right hand bend and the turning down to Alagadi village is on the left just as you start going back down hill. There are signs...

Go down this road keeping left past Benoz and Hoca restaurants and keep St Katleens restaurant to your right.

i.e. take the left fork where the tarmac road splits. Just past a few houses on the right and two on the left there is a sharp right turn over a ditch by an electricity pole. Turn right and the Goat Shed is 50 yds up on the left.

Hello.

Blogspot now http://www.turtleproject2010.blogspot.com

Regs beach clean it would be good to do somthing at Alagadi at the end of May and better if we can get schools involved.

Last year the Esentepe Beledeye did not empty bins in the car parks at the start of A1 and A2 though they did collect from the beach bar. They (I think mınistry of tourism) have now buılt a public loo and shower block (its all timber and actually doesnt look that bad). I think this will have to be manned and no doubt they will charge. Fingers crossed they use the money they make on this to fund the emptying of the bins by Esentepe Beledeye. The beledeye gave lack of funds from the Tourism Ministry as their excuse last year.

Anyway, if this does not come off we will be emptying the bins again this year. This is an awful job and I hate asking the students to do it so we'll be glad of any help we can get. We normally bag up the rubbish and run it to the beach bar in the pick up truck.

For those to the west of Kyrenia who would like to help out there will be a beach clean on the 2nd June on the beach about 5minutes drive west from Karsiyaka. We had lots of turtle activity there last year and hoping for more this year so would appreciate any beach clean help we can get

Time to be confirmed, the more the merrier!

Thanks

OK folks, Robin has given us a date for this year's big Alagadi Beach Clean - It's Friday 4th June.

The time is provisionally 9 am onwards. I will post again if the time changes... but please put the date in your diaries...

Remember to bring gardening gloves if you have them as there is always some broken glass and sharps to contend with. A hat, some water and extra bin bags are also useful...

Turkcell have arranged some school presence, we are trying to get more.
