I assume if Talat gets re-elected nothing much will change in the trnc.

However if Eroglu wins the election what will he bring to the table?

Talat wants Bi Zonal by communal which i assume would mean Euro Zone.Eroglu wants two sates which i assume would mean that the North would still only be recognised by Turkey, unless some other deal was struck.,like the velvet curtain,

Once bitten twice shy me thinks. The tcs voted to become one the last time and ended up getting kicked in the knacks.Cant see them going for it this time.So it has to be Eroglu for me,

Paul.

Sorry but have to disagree. At least under Talat some progress has been made and there is a degree of hope for the future (IPC, trade talks etc). I fear that under Eroglu any advances will be lost and the TRNC will take two steps backwards. Whilst Talat may not have achieved as much as he hoped during his presidency, much of his time has been spent undoing the mess that UBP created in the first place - TC's do seem to have short memories !!

Just my opinion of course and without the right to vote it means absolutely nothing ;-)

This is what Talat has 'achieved'.

'Talat was elected president five years ago to replace founding President Rauf Denktaş – or “Mr. No,” as he was then often called – with a pledge to resolve the Cyprus problem “within three months.” Failing to achieve that, he then pledged to reach an accord with the Greek Cypriot side by the end of 2008, later by the end of 2009 and most recently by March 2010. Now, he is asking a Turkish Cypriot electorate frustrated with the slow pace of the peace talks to give him another five years with a pledge to reach an accord in 18 months at the latest.'

Change is as good as rest,is the principle I'd go by.Otherwise, the two are as good or as bad as each other.

What majority does the winner of the election have to get for it not to go to a second vote,

A year ago Talat was saying we can manage without Turkey, that mainlanders should return home, etc., now he refers to our 'friends the Turkish workers' he also wanted to know why people went to Eroglu rallies with the Cypriot Flag and the Turkish Flag, his CTP party never showed them - all change now - he flies both flags the only one he needs is the hammer and sickle - notice he has not refered to his partner in the south as Comrade - says it all really - bring on Eroglu.

Re-Mess 14,

So even if Eroglu wins, the North will still carry on with re-unification talks even though Eroglu really wants two states. So basically who ever wins the election willl do as Turkey says.Whats the point of the election then,

Paul.

re 15 - if i were me, Mr Erdogan would have listened to me in 2004, and I'd have advised him how to 'get out' with Turkish pride intact and retaining a controlling interest in the 'north' of Cyprus... ;)

re 19

Mr Denktash told folks they had 'nationhood' - would Mr Eroglu be kidding himself, too ?!

the ONLY way forward is bi-zonal - bi-communal, federated regions as part of one RECOGNISED entity.. it's not just Mr Eroglu that has to face that...

The Election is due under 'TRNC' rules... but let's be realistic about who REALLY calls the shots.. he who pays the piper and all that...

Message 19

The point of the election is that the TC voters have and will exercise their right to vote for the next President of the TRNC. If the voting was manipulated in anyway then there would be riots. So it has to be a democratic process but what happens after that will be the interesting part of it all.

It doesn't matter what happens after the elections. We'll still find something to talk/knock them about.

This is how it's been, this is how it'll be.

message 20 mark:

I do see your point of view about "one entity"

when cristofias was quoted in today's cyprus mail online he also rejected any idea of "compromise"

his plan is, allegedly, to have the much bandied-about bizonal-bicommunalism in one single state

support for this interpretation of "progress" was found in talat giving in and "agreeing" to federation,

rather than a confederation of equal states

so that's it then?

well:

since there is now admitted to be no compromise about vital security and property

on offer from the other side, only a bigged-up version of the republic of cyprus

sugared with vague promises to care for "our tc's" (and they are certainly not mine mark) instead,

neither little talat with his small kindnesses nor tough eroglu with his fierce nationalism

may expect an island partner with whom they can do business on the cyprus question

while the other side spellbound by their greater-cyprus dreams missed the last bus marked "compromise"

Dear Andre,

their will be other buses.. ;) ..but the destination is still Compromise - based around the dreaded A-Plan framework ..

TR can't afford any other soln.

Talat & Christofias can talk all they want, but when it comes to a vote, there will never be an agreement.

It will be just like 2004 again, where promises are made by the EU but broken, so what is the point of Talat continuing?

The north & the south don't want to have anything to do with each other, so why the pipe-dream?

The current "talks" are just a way of delaying Turkey's accession process - don't kid yourselves it's anything to do with Cyprus

MMMMMMM, re message 14: I think you are right! But I still favour talat - as a solution with him will be quiker than the sleeping Eroğlu. Comrade! Also the few democratic rights we have may be a bit more secured.

Anyhow, well see..

BTW, latest UBP scandal:

he free TCs were shocked yesterday by this video showing a man who was forced to film himself while giving his vote to UBP !!

So what has happend?

Previously giving his vote, he was promised a job and given 50YTL by UBP officials - he even named them. Full Stroy:

interesting article mvp

like I always thought, cyprus is far too minor an issue in the eu

to influence the grim and viscerial opposition to turkey joining

from certain members

but then again as the bloke said, "the bigger the lie"... (etc)
