You will need to enrole with one of the driving schools who will assess your driving skills then put you forward for your test in Kyrenia. The schools are in the road leading up to the wednesday market, as is the driving test centre.

Hi Roger

You can drive here on your UK licence with no problems if you are a visitor. If you live here or if you purchase your own car then you have to apply for a TRNC licence after 3 months (I think). It is just a case of filling in an application form, providing photos and supplying copies of your UK licence. You then get a credit card style licence. The office is near to the immigration office in Lefkosa where you go to get your temporary residency. Forgot to say that you have to pay for the licence. Cost depends on how long you want the licence to last.

hi nemika. things to remember on your test. always drive with one arm out of window. always drive with mobile phone to your ear.always drive at exessive speed with no consideration to others.for advanced driving test. all three together

Hi Nemika...I know your post is dated 29/06 but was wondering if you managed to find an English Speaking driving instructor?

If not, I can Highly recommend the guy who is giving my hubby and I our first ever lessons at the age of 61 and 47!!!

We are both due to take our test on monday!!! Let me know if you still need someone and I will pass you his details.

Redsnapper.....msg 7....naughty naughty!

Thought you might be interested to know that the FEMALE expats here in TRNC are highly reguarded for their considerate driving....that came direct from the test examiners in Nicosia...not me!!!

Re your msg 9...bet it will amaze you (or even shock you!!) to know that after 13 lessons we have not done one emergency stop and you don't even do one on the test!!!!...frightenening or what?!

Gruggs....how are you my friend? How's the wife...still putting up with your devilish ways??!!!

Hi Puppylover,

As a matter of interest only,

in your lessons were you asked,

to reverse.

do a three point turn,

do parallel parking,

or overtake,

or any form of eye test?

Just curious, honest

1. reverse....they do not use that terminology...they say "right turn" or "left turn"

(first time on a lesson the instructor said "right turn"...and I indicated to turn right!!) Got it right the second time though!

2. Three point turn....yup....one I am good at!! It's the "don't bump the pavement" bit that concerns me...what pavement??

3. Parallel parking....nope....don't think they know what that is over here!!

4. Overtake.....oh yes....especially the Dolmus and the cement mixer lorries....frightening!!

5. Eye test...I did show them my white stick and I took my labrador!!

Only joking....

To get a "Student" licence (provisional to you and I) but I prefer "student"...makes me feel young......we had to read a number plate in the Wednesday market car park and then we had to go into an office one by one and a tester flicked through a laminated book with road signs and pointed to seven signs which we had to tell him what they meant.

My hubby took 1 minute and 18 seconds to complete the test and to collect the completed paperwork when he passed.

When I did my test after him our driving instructor laughed when I said it was too easy..... (especially as I had spent the whole weekend swotting the highway code book) little did I know that the tester did not speak/understand one word of English...could have told him the story of goldilocks and the three bears and I would still have passed the test!!

Frightening...but very true...and they wonder why the death rate on their roads is so high.

RE-MESSAGE 5

I didn't know that if you owned a car you had to apply for a TRNC driving license, even if you aren't resident and only come for a month at a time?

You dont have to go to Lefkosa for the Licence, you can go to the driving school near the police station, and they sort it for you.
