Folks,

This has just been posted on the Irish Aviation Authority website. Northern Irish and Scottish airports are also likely to be affected.

The IAA has informed Irish-based airlines that it is concerned that Irish Airports may be impacted by the drift south of the volcanic ash cloud caused by the north easterly winds.

Current information from the VAAC London suggests that a ‘no fly zone’ may have to be imposed over Ireland tomorrow that may affect Dublin, Shannon and some regional airports.

The IAA expects a further update from the VAAC at 20.00hrs and will make a decision then concerning operations at Irish Airports and Irish Airspace. Over-flights of Ireland from the UK and Europe are NOT expected to be impacted tomorrow and southern UK Airports (Heathrow etc ) are not expected to be impacted. Flights originating from Irish airports may be affected.

A statement on the Operation of Irish Airports and Airspace will be posted on the IAA website at 2030.

Luck is not on our side. Flight to Larnaca cancelled on 19TH April and we are booked to go to visit family in England tomorrow. Feckin' Heck. Are we being forewarned about some disaster or is it just us?

Sorry folks,

The IAA will close Irish airspace from 0700 tomorrow. NATS are expected to follow suit for Northern Ireland. As Navek has shown above western Scotland is also threatened.

Ryanair have announced '"disruption and cancellations are likely. Going on past experience, I believe they will cancel all Irish and Scottish flights tomorrow and possibly for longer if the wind does not change.

I may have updates later.

We are monitoring closely. we have Monarch flights form Manchester booked for Wednesday as we lost our 22nd April flights from Stansted, as they flew, but we were stuck in LA. We surely couldn't be unlucky twice? Sounds as if it is a thick cloud though as it is thicker than the new regulations allow. Hope the winds are with us!

IAA has now issued statement that Irish airports will be closed until at least 13.00 Tuesday. Further statement will be mafe 09.00 on Tues. Forecast for rain lon Wed and change of wind direction so disruption should not be on the same scale as 2 weeks ago,

Hi Lilli,

You should expect that all transatlantic flights to/from Ireland after 0700 tomorrow at least will be cancelled. Aer Lingus the American and Canadian carriers have all of their aircraft on the other side of the water. The first of them will be due to take off shortly after midnight Irish/UK time. The first two EI104 from JFK and the EI136 BOS will probably make it in to Dublin but all later flights will be cancelled and the aircraft will stay where they are.

As for blaming the Irish...you are right! The US airlines are already preparing a law suit against the EU and Eurocontrol stating that they over reacted the last time. They will probably go after us this time.

Pity for them we have no money left!!

Next update 0900 BST.

Latest update from the IAA;

The IAA has cleared Irish Airports to open for full operations from 1300 hrs local time today Tuesday 4th May.

Current Information from the VAAC confirms this information. We expect operations to be normal at all Irish Airports for the rest of today. Ireland will not fall within the predicted area of ash concentrations that exceed acceptable engine manufacturer tolerance levels.

Our decision to close earlier today was based solely on the safety risks to crews and passengers as a result of the drift south of the volcanic ash cloud caused by the north easterly winds. The situation will be reviewed as the week goes on. Winds are forecast to continue coming from a Northerly direction for the next few days and this could lead to further problems.

There will be a further update on the IAA website at 20.00hrs tonight, Tuesday 4th May, 2010.

This will affect Belfast & City of Derry also.

Good luck with the travels folks! It's OK if you are stuck Cyprus side but not much fun in YUK! I was stuck in the trouble 2 weeks ago and I was kidnapped by Thomas Cook for 6 days ended up on a jolly in Ayai Napa, confined to barracks on full board, it was hardship, honest, we don't do beach holidays! The term being used was we were "rescued" from Cyprus, well I was also evacuated 36 years ago from the same island so we will really have to rethink if we should return, somebody might be trying to tell us something here!.....

Hi all,

It is getting worse.

Northern ireland and Scotland are currently closed to flights. North West England and North Wales are on standby for closure. As 'North Wales' is only 50 miles from Dublin, I expect the East coast of Ireland may follow suit during the night.

Scottish and N Irish airports to close over ash risk

Airports in parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland are to close from 0700 BST because of risks from volcanic ash, the Civil Aviation Authority has said.

Glasgow, Prestwick and Derry are likely to be closed all day, while there are plans to shut Inverness in the morning only, and Belfast in the afternoon.

The CAA advised air passengers to check with airports before travelling and warned the situation was changeable.

Dublin airport will be closed to all flights from 1300 BST today.

Airports in North West England are also expected to be affected. Manchester, Liverpool, Blackpool and maybe more.

Will this ever end?

DD,

As you say, 'when will it end'

Certainly bad news for everyone hoping to travel.

We had our flight LHR-LCA cancelled on 19th April with BA and almost booked for today Belfast to Larnaca which has also been cancelled. Instead we thought that we'd go to see family in England yesterday.

Guess what? Also cancelled.

Remaining hopeful that we get to Cyprus on 19th May........................

Here we go again folks.

Transatlantic flights a suffering delays of two to three hours due to re-routing north or south of the cloud.

If it moves just a little further east Ireland and UK may be closed down again.

Fingers crossed.
