We are moving out at the end of August. We have already purchased a car but it will be used by the previous owner until a week before we arrive. We have found that one of us needs to return to the U.K. in mid September via Paphos. Will i have any trouble going there and back with just my U.K. licence and passport?. What other paperwork should i have? Thanks.

One assumes that the car is on Turkish Cyprus plates, and that you will have put it in your name and insured it in your name before your trip to Paphos/UK.

In which case you can take the car south provided you buy seperate insurance (at the border) for the Greek sector. You have to have seperate insurance, you can't buy one insurance to cover both sectors.

Your UK driving licence will still be valid to drive on both sides of the border in September.

If you're talking about driving to the airport and back, you'll have no problem. Take your normal paperwork with you. When you get to the crossing point, you'll need to get a RoC registration document (it's free, but they insist you have it. You need to show your UK license to get it). You will also need to buy insurance for the RoC. Be warned, though, this will be 3rd party only. The minimum period you can buy is one month. I can't remember the cost, but the ball park is 25 Euros. If the car is still in the other persons name, it might be prudent getting a letter of authority from him.

One thing you have to be aware of, is that in the TRNC, any traffic fines are attached to the vehicle, not the driver. You'll need to check with the police that there is nothing outstanding before you take ownership

Hi Jefferson,

You'll also need to buy an MOT certificate at the border,

after you've got your insurance,

free of charge, I think.
