In April this year the fence was taken down because of the road widening and a young man who lives opposite in the grounds of the hotel and looks after the donkeys on behalf of Richards family (Richard sadly passed away some 18 months ago) with the help of friends and some residents transferred the donkeys to their prresent location further along opposite Escape memorial. This area is only suitable for a short term and because of this with the help of a good friend and her contacts with Alsancak Supermarkets food is being supplied FREE to sustain them in the area.

No one can give us a definite time scale for the fence to be reinstated.

What we now need URGENTLY are VOLUNTEERS to help with the Supermarket Sweep each day collecting the leftover fruit and veg.

If YOU can help please let us know and we will make arrangements to meet.

Yes I personally saw the Manager Ozman Bay of Lemar after Tom Roche spoke to me and he arranged for me to come on Tuesdays and Fridays at 5pm only. I did last Friday for the first time and will come again tonight.

Went to feed them yesterday and now there is too much veg and fruit being put over the fence and it is starting to rot and has 1000s of flies around which may cause more harm than good. It would be great if someone could clean it up. I would but not sure how the donkeys would react and not that brave to find out.

Thanks Doggie, I knew him in London from his restaurants in Covent Garden. He was known as King Richard and did a lot of good in and around Covent Garden. His daughter Sybil is now running his restaurant and I have asked a friend to contact her about the donkeys. He still has staff at his unfinished hotel on the main road there and they should be looking after the Donkeys. He also has a large site above Lapta which we knew as the village where he has other Donkeys and Birds and Dogs etc., that is also staffed. I went to his funeral in Nicosia on Christmas Day 2008.

Anyway, if I hear any news via my friend I will post here.

HI - I have just collected several bags of freshly mown grass from a neighbour and was planning to take it to the donkeys tomorrow, however having read the last thread about rotting fruit and veg atttracting flies, is it OK to leave grass for them?

not sure about donkeys but certainly if you give newly mown gras cuttings to horses they will cause colic

Thanks Cassius. Stupidly, I didn't look it up on the internet to ask the question. I just have & you are right, a few sites do say, do not feed donkeys grass clippings ! So I am glad I asked the question before I took it to them tomorrow!

msg 17 our friend Eddie knew him too and is going to see Richard's daughter when he gets back to UK. Ercan is still looking after the animals and giving fresh water to the donkeys everyday. But because of the lack of vegetation in the short term enclosure we needed to get people and supermarkets involved in helping to fed them. This we have done and with the help of msg 15 Res and Judy there are now 4 of us to collect the fruit and veg. Look forward to seeing Postings from you
