Just heard that the Pegasus flight due in about 5 am(delayed about 8 hours in London)was refused permission to land as it approached Ercan.Air traffic control refused to switch runway lights on and plane has had to return to Antalya.Thank goodness they had enough fuel to go back.If this is true, what evil people.Hope they all get the sack.Anyone know if this is a continuation of yesterdays strike or something else?

Might be nobody would accept the credit risk of lending a kuros for the meter for the lights ;-)

The situation is getting very ugly. People involved should be punished very severely and set an example to others. Such behaviour is not acceptable. They are confusing the right to strike with irresponsible behaviour. If you want to strike you stay away from work but you cannot pick and choose.

Quite agree elko. These people are endangering life. If it is found to be industrial action they should be dismissed instantly.

Close Ercan and see what they think of that. The FAA should make Ercan off-limits until they realise they can't use their right to strike to endanger life.

Then it's a pity that Erdogan didn't do something about the CTA situation long ago - and not only that.......

This time of year Ercan has problems with ground fog and lots of planes are sent back to Antalya/Izmir.

Aren't we jumping the gun on this with the runway lights etc?

Msg 1
Thank goodness they had enough fuel to go back
No aircraft will leave it's point of origin without enough fuel to hold over its destination and then divert to an alternate if it needs to do so.

Whatever the reason for the refusal to land, lives were not in danger.

Newscoop I agree it was very misty on the girni side of the mountains at 6:30this morning and Ercan do not have the ability to land planes in fog so I go with you in view of planes going over to Turkey since 7:15

The night that little Ismail lost is arm in that dreadful accident, there was a military guy at Lefkosa Hospital.

When he found out how serious it was, he organised a military flight from Turkey, it arrived within the hour or so .

Unfortunatley it could not land due to fog at Ercan. He had to go on a charter flight the next day.

Msg 19: 30+ different Unions are striking because their members face unemployment. They are not overly concerned that you get to have a nice holiday in your second home! Put it into perspective.

Too many knee jerk reactions on this landing issue.

M22. Thought the idea of the strike was to safeguard jobs. Can't see this working if nobody wants to fly with them. Not all passengers are second homeowners you know.

The synopsis of most that I have read about KTHY is that it was the intransigence of the unions that primarily caused the collapse. On the fatal day the staff pi**ed off to protest in Lefkosia whilst leaving passemgers stranded at Ercan with no information or support. This is the staff who 2 weeks before had begged for public support and understanding when they marched, yet again, to protest at possible cuts when the government was still trying to save the airline. They got that support - but did not see fit to support the passengers that counted on them.

Sorry, no, I don't feel much sympathy for them.

'Who is going to 'punish' his third cousin, twice removed? '

Same problem with the banks and builders in the mortgage frauds, Wish Turkey would get involved and get tough on all the nepotism and the corruption that encourages. Do their taxpayers know where their hard earned taxes end up? How many Mercs ,BMW'S ,Humvees in an average Turkish town of 250,00.
