We were at Alagadi turtle beach this weekend and the trash situation there was embarrassing. Beer bottles, soda cans, razors you name it!!! It is a danger to the world we live in.. And must be dealt with immediatly.

We are arranging trash bags, gloves, a bus to take you there and much more. And we already have many people interested in contributing, thank you to all. We are trying to decide on the date at the moment and will post when we have made arrangements. If you have any ideas feel free to put them forward, on the date , time, organization. We know that there are people out there interested in joining in and hope that you do.

Bless your hearts.

Why not incorporate it with a BBQ or picnic at the end of the trash cleaning? Once people are finished they can go for a dip and then eat? Bring your own of course! Just a thought.

You can get the children involved by maybe giving them Turtle Certificates or something? I will help with the template but do not have the facility to photocopy. Maybe something like "Congratulations, you helped with the Turtle Beach Clean Up and are now officially a Tidy Turtle Tot?

Fully support your initiative but unfortunately I will be in UK during this period.

However, your post does beg the question - Why aren't the Beledeyi doing this ?? If it is a question of funds, then maybe the Ministry of Tourism should be approached to fund it. After all, Alagadi Beach is (allegedly) one of the main tourist draws for the TRNC. I agree that the state of the place is deplorable, maybe the police should be approached to patrol the beach and fine people if caught littering. Unfortunately littering is something that the locals seem to excel at, only this morning I was walking my dogs on the wasteland down past the Paradise Bar. There is a lovely littte picnic area there overlooking the sea which is awash with plastic bags, beer bottles, used nappies etc. I frequently see local families using the place and it amazes me that they don't have the common decency to take their rubbish home with them. Continued...

Thanks guys.. For all your input, ideas and support!! Feels good to see people care.

Oldshep, I love the sign idea! Will let you know exact dates. See you there.

Lor49, will probably be sooner. Hope to see you next time!

fiendishpaul, the only explanation is , lack of funding and lack of consciousness! People must be made aware.

Also the problem in Alagadi turtle beach has to do with the Esentepe Municipality, so if anyone can pull any strings there that will help alot!

BTW the signs are going to cost around 55 TL each and they will say "take your trash home" or something similar both in Turkish and English. If anyone wants to sponsor a sign pls let us know.

Thank you guys!!! Keep it coming.

Cleanup will be next Sunday August the 1st. Thanks to Esentepe municipality for their involvment, the project has gotten seriously larger. It's promising to be a major cleanup. We plan to take lasting measures and we hope that we can keep it clean from now on.

Thanks to all..

We would help out if we were there but unfortunately back in the UK now.

As fiendish Paul said, it's incredidble that the local authorities plug Alagadi as this Turtles paradise and yet leave it in such a S*** state all the time!!

Also, why can't the owners/proprietors of the very nice Turtle Paradise restaurant & bar take some active involvement and responsibility in keeping the beach clean, rocket science it isn't!

Thinking outside the box... the one left on the on the beach

If the government, who seem to pass laws like we pass water, passed a new law requiring all visitors to the beaches to take their litter home. i.e. not even use the bins, and this was enforceable by confiscation of the offenders car used in the commission of the crime of littering - then maybe the beaches would be cleaner....

This would hit them where it hurts.. if the car is used to transport the litter in they it should be used to take it away too...

Until then, those inclined to leave litter will leave litter as they have no tangible incentive that they can see to do otherwise.

Personally, I don't know why the 'government' doesn't take half of its' civil servants out of their offices where, lets face it, they do very little and set them to work cleaning beaches and public spaces - at least then they could be seen to earn their wages rather than sit on their backsides drinking coffee and reading the papers !

Groucho is right, the only way that the locals will amend their practices is by hitting them in the pocket. It does amaze me that a population who profess such great pride in their 'nation' see fit to blight its' landscape at every opportunity. Lack of consciousness or just lazy ?? I know what I think !!

its not just the locals, its us brits as well we all need to take reponsibility for litter ,be it discarded ice lolly wrapper or beer bottles on a beach, or building debris from our villas , yes its our villa,s our debris ,i myself take a supermarket bag to the beach and fill it everytime ,i know its just a little but if everyone did it 100s x 1 bag prob gone, but if we want this problem solved, we have to think about education, schools, signs , do you remember KEEP BRITAIN CLEAN campaign maybe a keep trnc campaign, but cleaning the beach is a first step , get TV on site spread the news

I applaud your enthusiasm but until the locals are forced to change their habits then I am afraid to say that you are p***ing into the wind.

As for building debris from our villas being our debris - NO, the debris should have been discarded legally by the builder - that is what he was paid for

Water and hats sounds good ! We have to start around 6-7 am really, it will get too hot otherwise. We are arranging a bus to pick people up from infront of the post office. Official time will be available by latest this Tuesday for those interested. Otherwise everyone is free to come by their own means. I will be there at around 6-7 am personally. Also it is official, the Esentepe Belediye are sending in their trucks and man power. We still need you volunteers out there to set an example to the rest! So please make an effort. Its one day that will mean alot and will touch many peoples lives. Thank you to all

Also we will discuss long term measures to be taken with the officials on the day. So anyone who wants to voice their concerns that day can come personally or pass it on to me, and I will do my best to represent all!

The date is officially set for August the 2nd the Sunday after this one!

Dudakli,

I will send you the info to your mail, and you can always follow the post

Oldshep,

We are undecided where to start from as of yet. AS you know there is an Alagadi 2 on the , entrance from the Esentepe road. That is where most of the nests are. The situation there was terrible. With enough man power we can clean it all hopefully. Thank you soo much!

Petition the prison authorities to let out the 'cons' for the day to help with the clean up. Care in the community or community service, I'm sure the inmates would enjoy a 'jolly' out in the sun!

there needs to be a beach marshall handing spot fines to the people who drop the rubbish with no exceptions people who argue the police should be called in and once the word spreads on this little island people will start to respect it ..theres an 884euro maximum fine for throwing litter in the south and there beaches are invaded with more locals and tourists than the north could ever imagine and at the end of the day the beaches are left spotless brushed and combed for the next day . they are awarded the blue flag by the tourist industry can any one beach boast this here??? education in the schools would be another angle as kids can make thier parents aware of the enviramental problems that rubbish will create.

just returned from turtle beach and my wifes bikini and my sons fins are ruined with oil blobs the problem must be from the power station on this occasion as the oil is very fresh and recently deposited only in this area as weve been on every beach on the island and this is the second time its happened there .. so much for the protected zone

no wonder turtles are becoming extinct north cyprus probably contributes to more deaths than hunting du to lack of care

shame on you its digusting

Try soaking the items in a dilute solution of 'Washing Soda Crystals' - Sodium Deca-Hydrate - from the 'Pound Shop'

Or a dilute solution of 'Caustic Soda Crystals' - Sodium Hydroxide, which is sold in Supermarkets as a 'Drain Unblocker'!!! - you would need to wear rubber gloves when handling these materials, and avoid splashing...

Having said that, my old Mum used to dismantle her gas stove, and soak the bits in Caustic Soda solution - brought it up a treat!

My friend and I were swimming most days over the last 2 weeks on Nature Beach

and the first day we were appalled at the rubbish which seemed much more than usual

On the following day it had mostly been neatly bagged and we were so impressed that

volunteers had done this in the burning heat.

I must say that it is not only "locals" who leave rubbish. We followed an English boy back

up the path (whose language as he spoke to his father was filthy) and saw him throw a large

plastic bottle into the bushes. My young friend challenged him, that it was a turtle beach, to

which he replied "I'm not bovvered" We were disgusted at his attitude and that of his father who

said nothing.

Surely the Belediye must do something about the rubbish being left. There are not enough bins

and they never seem to be empted. No notices telling people to take their rubbish back with them

if it can't be binned, and some serious threats of fines might work.
