The coastline of North Cyprus has got the lot: dramatic scenery, pretty coves, and most importantly, miles of unspoilt sandy beaches. Here’s our guide to the best beaches near Kyrenia.

Public and private beaches in North Cyprus

In 1991, the government of North Cyprus brought in charges for some beaches, and designated others as "halk plaj", or public beaches. The private, fee-charging beaches tend to have the best facilities, such as umbrellas, snack-bars and showers, and are kept in good clean condition. The local Turkish Cypriots flock to the free, public beaches at weekends, which can get busy. Public beaches do not tend to have good facilities, but the locals tend to make up for it by bringing their own food and having a barbeque, which is not permitted on private beaches.
