In-flight lessons on the Cyprus problem

By Sir,

Returning home to Cyprus last Friday (flight 359 from Manchester), my husband and I were considerably startled by the final announcement from the flight deck just before we landed at Larnaca, which apart from the usual information regarding landing and weather conditions included a gratuitous and to our minds quite uncalled-for summary of the ‘Cyprus problem’, lasting perhaps some three minutes. This was clearly the speaker's personal political view, and could in no way have been authorised by (or reflect the official position of) Cyprus Airways. The Cypriot lady sitting beside us was equally astonished.

The passengers on this flight were presumably mostly either Cypriots, or (like ourselves) permanent residents/frequent visitors, or tourists. The first two categories are well aware of the history and situation; tourists may or may not be aware on this subject, but we submit that CY employees have no right to proselytise their captive audience in such an unwarranted and improper manner.

We are sending a copy of this message to the Chairman of Cyprus Airways.

Probably the chairman will send a reply with more leaflets and propaganda. Its a waste of time writing to them.

The same thing happened to some of my relatives a few years ago when they flew with Cyprus Airways. Complaints won't get you anywhere, best form of action - don't fly with them.

If you are brave enough you can raise your voice during the flight and shout back and say that you do not want to hear such propaganda. That will guarantee you a very welcome reception at landing from the immigration police and the customs officers!!!

This is a job (not) for Eric Seans !!!

Once when forced to fly Cyrus airways back to GB due to availability problems I was sat just behind the former president of the ROC. Strangely a business man was next to him. As part of their conversation the ex pres gave the guy an incredibly one sided view of the history of the island. Later when he had finished I was also in conversation and pointed out that there was another side to the story and provided some details. Ex Pres and aide were not best pleased!

I have written (by e-mail) to the Cyprus Mail in the past defending "our" side of the story and it was printed. Address given at the time was my TRNC one.

Anyone care to try again?
