HI, My husband needs regular platelet donors to enable him to basically stay alive. He has APLASTIC ANEMIA and needs platlets every 9-10 days. we are trying to get together a group of people willing to give up two hours every 2-3 months. Donors should be under 55 years, preferably male (the blood bank prefer males-better veins!).

After having a blood test, the process takes place in Lefkosa Blood bank- blood groups in order of preference

O poss/ O neg/ A poss/B poss.........

We have been getting donors for the past month, through BRS but due to the age factor this is now "dried" up....

Irish Blood Transfusion Service Hi Christine-thanks for your query. Guidelines and restrictions can vary between blood services, so it is difficult for us to give you the reason behind the criteria you mentioned. In Ireland, though both men and women may donate platelets, women who have ever been pregnant are excluded from the platelet donor panel. This is due to the risk of TRALI (Transfusion Related Acute Lung Injury), a serious reaction that can occur in patients as a complication of platelet transfusion. It is linked to antibodies found in the blood of some women who have had one or more pregnancies. For donor safety reasons, we also ask that people begin giving platelets before their 60th birthday.

The best way to find out the exact reasons would be to contact the blood service directly. We hope that this goes some way to answering your query. Regards, IBTS

message 7,

Is the findings of a wee bit research I did as I was puzzled as to why men only and the veins theory didn't work for me. Plus this keeps it at the top.

Thanks to the Irish Blood Transfusion service once again they have been great this last year answering my questions.

ACCORDING TO British blood donor service both are acceptable....but you try getting this past the TRNC blood bank.

it all depends on age/fitness and veins being OK....!!!!!?????.....thanks johngood/...will be in touch
