Hi all, sadly our dog got hold of some fresh poisoned meat hidden in a bush just off a pathway. The area is just behind the 'swiss chalet' style house leading up to High View Homes current development, left hand side of road heading towards Girne, behind the new petrol station.

We would like to thank Sibel our vet, who came out to meet us at the surgery, even though it was Bayram, and surgery was closed. We were fortunate to have some antedote at home so it gave us 30 minutes of extra time to get her to the vet. Sibel then hooked her up to a drip, gave her four more injections to keep her alive. In this time she lost all use of her back legs, went totally blind, and lost all her senses. She was so distressed we thought we were going to lose her. She is at home now slowly recovering. Sibel wants to see her again tomorrow, even though it is still the holiday.

Apologies to the careful driver going into Lemar at Karakum, we were behind you beeping the horn frantically. So sorry...x

Glad to hear that she is doing well. Thank you Sibel for your dedication and for always going beyond the call of duty with your clients.

Thanks LaptaMike. Sibel said the shepherds put the meat down, mainly for stray dogs and foxes. A friend of mine suggested it could be a good idea if there was some sort of 'sign' that could be put up to warn dog owners of the danger in those areas. It wouldn't unfortunately help the strays, but it would give us all a chance to avoid the area. She still looks very sorry for herself, but far better than the mess she was in earlier today.

Mollycorbin. I agree, without Sibels dedication, our dog would definitely not be with us now. We are indebted to her, and her husband who also came to the surgery with her today due to the holiday. Wonderful people....x

Our dogs found poisoned duck thrown into one of the fields, an elderly local forced a cup of table salt down both dogs, which makes them violently sick, then a pint of milk to drink, no food just water. This may give you breathing time to get to a vet.Ours are working farm dogs,so nothing is safe.

Hi cyprus, our dog Sophie was poisend when we lived in Esentepe area (opposite the Poppin) We managed to get her to Sibbels just in time. It took over six months for her to recover fully but glad to say she is back to her normal self now. Wish you all the best.

This is very odd, The only people who use this area apart from dog walkers are the shepherd who has dogs to help look after his flock so he won't be putting poison down and those out hunting with dogs - again not likely.

Cyprus8, thanks for the warning - I have passed this on to our neighbours who walk their dog there twice a day. They said that their dog picked up the scent of something in that area yesterday but they called her away - sounds like she had a lucky escape.

I always thought this particular area was safe but have taken to walking our dog on the lead, mainly because of snakes rather than poison.

I'm so sorry that your dog has suffered this and hope it makes a speedy recovery. I would like to get hold of some antidote, could you tell me where I can get it?

So sorry to hear about your dog - and the one on another thread. Fingers crossed (and all our paws) that she makes a full recovery.

Warning Posters - KAR do an A4 poster (in Turkish and English) warning people if poison has been found in a particular area. If anyone wants one please contact them on 0533 8694098.

Also there were particular muzzles that they used to sell which were very effective if dogs are prone to picking up bits and pieces whilst out - not sure if they still have them.

A friend of mine lost her dog last night plus a neighbours at Aligadi. Poison and agin the only person that used the path was a shepherd. A couple of years ago she lost 2 dogs, same area to poison, something has to be done. None of these dogs were noisy or a nuisance or roamed far, they were just out for a walk.

Re muzzles: The one to buy is called Baskerville and it's very well engineered.

comeonaylin, I am not sure but I think what cyprus8 meant to say was atropine and not necessarily an antidote. You can buy a syringe and atropine and carry it with you. If the dog is poisoned and going into cardiac arrest, you can buy yourself some time by injecting the atropine which will increase the heart rate and allow you time to get further care. This is my rudimentary understanding of it anyway. Antidote would indicate that you know what the poison is as in a particular snake bite.

Thank you all for your kind words. Mollycorbin, you are correct. It is called 'Atropin', you also need the syringe and needle to inject. It was one of those things I 'always meant to get', but somehow never got around to it. Fortunately a friend of mine got some for her dog not so long ago, and bought some for us as well. I am now so grateful she is more organised than I am, I truly believe her forward thinking, and Sibels dedication saved our dog yesterday. The atropin was kept at home, and we were back within five minutes of the poison being consumed.

Sibel had to give her three more injections today, she still looks very sorry for herself. But she has regained her sight, and senses, and can stand unaided. I wanted to cry when I saw her wag her tail this morning. Our story could easily have been so different. Sibel told me that three dogs died yesterday with poisoning, one of them whilst on the drip at her surgery, as our dog was. So so sad, I am so sorry for the others.

Rocker, I can't imagine how you must be feeling. I remember reading a poem on here a while ago, written by someone in your situation. It was beautifully worded. Maybe someone can find it for you.

I hope you find some comfort in the fact that you kept your lovely dog safe here for 6 years, thats not an easy thing to do as many of us are finding out.

My thoughts are with you, and the other recenty bereaved dog owners.
