our 11 year old daughter found her beautiful pointer, biscuit, dead, after being poisoned today less than 100 yds from our home. this is our first posting. we had taken her in as a 10 week old pup one year ago after being found by the side of the road in catalkoy, tail docked and ready for a life as a hunting dog. she has been a wonderful addition to our little family here, quick to learn, great fun and our daughters best friend. we have this evening buried her on the cliff at alagadi where she was found, in her basket at our daughters request. we are enraged at the pointlessness of her death. we took in an unwanted dog and she was part of our home, she presented no harm to local livestock. our neighbours lost their dog today also. it seems unless the culprits are caught administering poison nothing can be done. we love living here but feel bereft and traumatised. a too common tradgedy we felt the need to share.

Gravybones, I am so sorry to hear about biscuit. Our dog too was poisoned today, we are hoping she will make it through. I wish there were something we could do about it. But sadly I think not. Our vet said the farmers are usually to blame, but they are trying to protect their livestock from stray dogs and foxes. I don't think they are targeting our family pets, but that won't help you or your family at this time I know. We are thinking of you and your family, its very distressing for everyone involved.....xx

So very sorry. It is bad enough that this has happened but it must be really traumatising for your daughter, I am thinking of the little one and the rest of the family.

Very sad. But why do you let your pets roam free? you should know by now the risk. One day a child will get poisoned.

So, what do you mean Quarmby?

That we should keep children on a lead with a muzzle as well?

Get a life.

I have a life. Just slowly read and inwardly digest what I have written. if these individuals just keep throwing poison down, it could be quite conceivable that a child could easily pick it up and swallow it one day. My comments were not meant to be facitious, unlike yours.

Quarmby, your comments are probably not appreciated by this poor family, especially not today. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, that all of us have been unfortunate enough to dwell on at sometime in our lives. A little kindness today is all that is required.

i had my beautiful BJ poisoned, he was thought dead 3 times, we and pertev brought him back to life , to have that fate is just too much to put into words.May he rest in peace. Sometimes you take them in as street dogs and try your best, they will always retain that unless it goes on for years.

Msg 15 a muzzle is not always the answer because our beautiful dog inhaled the poison whilst we were taking her and her brother for a walk, they never left our sides but she succumbed to the poison and the vet could not do a thing because of the inhalation and we just had to watch her terrified as she just did not know what was happening to her. Our thoughts are with all who have lost their beloved pets this way - something just has to be done but who will do it?

Muzzle may also help save your child should the dog turn nasty. Seems to be a common thing in the UK at the moment, another report today:
