The title is self explanatory

Has anyone actually tried and is happy with a local system that doesn't involve having a Jodrell bank in your garden?

Newscoop: Yearly subscription to Internet Provider in the UK -> yearly subscription to TV channels provider in the UK -> to pay once, hardware: Slingbox in the UK - software on your hard disk (free): Slingplayer -> All UK (and more) TV programmes on your computer screen. Buy the Slingcatcher (60 US dollars) and you have (wireless) your TV programmes on your normal TV screen also. More here: http://www.slingmedia.com

We use this system now for more than 18 months - it works excellent and is cheap. The weakest link is your connection to your TRNC ISP.

Newscoop in msg 1 asked for viable systems (obviously other systems than Dopi) - there's another thread where for the xxx-time complaints about Dopi can be filed. So: other systems than Dopi in this thread, please.

Ironically, Hans gave me the idea for this ( slingbox) as a commercial venture..

The 'weakest link' is actually also the uplink from the UK... you can always up your speed the CY end..

I have stated many times that slingbox is useless without a good connection both ends..

So, I've been 'playing' for six months - I have setup a FAST uplink - and it worked -PERFECTLY - even in the middle of Siberia !

I plan to offer UK TV via the net ! .. ALL the UK digital channels - as they are free .. you need only buy a set-top box/ slingbox - at cost -no dish - and pay for sharing the internet costs and electricity ..

You own the receiver / slingbox and can sell on the contract - if you decide to move back to the UK or have the kit posted to a UK address.

I'm kicking off the service in October and Hans ( I did promise him) is going to be the 'guinea pig', locally ...

Did you fall off your chair, Hans ? :D

There are cheaper, better systems than slingbox. I have tested several.

You need a minimum of 1Mbps constant bandwidth and at this rate the picture quality isn't great AND TRNC is not quite there as far as constant bandwidth is concerned. In the evenings when the internet is busy, you will have no service!

For the costs involved, your better off with something else.....Sorry mmmmmm

The answer is out there, but you need to ask about and get recommendations. That's where all our customers come from. Can't compete with Pirate' prices at £180 per year, but not too much more expensive and it's high definition and stays on 24/7, and we are available 7 days a week on the same telephone numbers that we have used for the last seven years 0533 869 4371/2

Most of the popular expat bars have our system

Dear Washerman

>>There are cheaper, better systems than slingbox. I have tested several. <<

*I'm* sorry, as I hoped you 'd be more of an 'expert' on Sat TV than you are re slingbox.. CLEARLY NOT ..

at 700 kps it is possible to watch [FULL SCREEN] a perfectly 'watchable' picture on a slingbox... !!

I'd prefer to watch on a big screen in HD but it more than does the job for those who want BBC 1, etc and can't justify / erect a 4.2m or 1.8m dish -

Perhaps you can tell us which systems are 'better' ? I''ll give you a 'hint' - I've been testing various options from a FAST uplink connection and getting feedback reports from Cyprus, Oz, Angola, Siberia, Moscow, USA, NZ, Bulgaria and Turkey [ to name but a view [ using other systems from Sony, DLink, etc] ....so guess what?... I even KNOW what I'm talking about ;) ...

Washerman, just for the record: I'm not talking your system down - I only said that (using a Slingbox based in Holland and 1Mbps Nethouse) we have the Dutch package of 36 channels (including a couple of foreign channels; more expensive packages offer more channels). We are satisfied for an estimated 98% throughout the year - for relatively very little money.

if you are looking at a 'satellite cyprus' system you should be aware that if you have a sat receiver it is already possible to view much of the content without a subscription - ex it is pointing at Nilesat - there are many existing suppliers offering a complete system for a LOT less than 220 GBP

If you are looking at premiership games then such a system is a great way to view in Cyprus - on a 1 m dish - don't accept smaller - but beware that the contracts for who shows the games change regularly - you might not be able to obtain a new subscription when the contract changes..

If you don't mind adverts and a lot of content in Arabic - a nilesat system is a good starting point for cheap [ non subscription ] TV in Cyprus..

If you are going to look at subscriptions you should also consider SKY - as you'd get other UK programmes in addition to the footie and a record of stability re availability of subscriptions from many sources including friends back home..

=> You're welcome here any time, Mark! We only seem to have slightly different opinions about a minor political problem in Cyprus. But I don't doubt for a minute that you know what you are talking about re: TV etc.

Hi Hans,

not unlike 'washerman' I was dismissive of slingbox - but I'd made the mistake of trying to test it using slow UK ADSL uplinks.. it works perfectly across ones' wireless home network - to allow you to watch ( say) Formula 1 on a laptop in the garden..but it always fell down due this uplink speed issue in the UK...

Now, we have [finally ] faster uplinks and slingbox makes sense to place-shift.. it works just like you are viewing it across a home network..

If Kylie has one to watch UK content in Oz is that a 'recommendation' ? ;)

mmmmmm - "Perfectly watchable" is that how you are advertising it? I doubt that many customers will answer your advert.

700kbps is low quality video. Live BBC iplayer uses 800kbps - many people have experience of this and may also say that is also perfectly watchable. Slingbox is lower quality. A lot of people in TRNC have trouble with youtube clips in the evenings!

Anyway, what happens in the evenings? Bandwidth is stretched between 6pm and 10pm? Generally, a 128KBps connection gives 30-50KBs (400kbps)

You even know what you are talking about - I think that you rely too much on your reputation and that your facts are thin on the ground, but let's wait and see.

And yes, many people realise that you only promote your mate's Sky package and rubbish everything else. By the way, how much is your Slingbox set up going to cost?

Laugh

Dutch, I don't doubt that you are satisfied, although recently, I do remember you bad-mouthing your internet service provider. Does it work when the internet is down or, slow?

Starting to sound like the other failed systems that everyone are complaining about. Isn't that the main excuse that the current failed TV suppliers use a lot?

If it relies on the internet to work, I think that most people will realise just how reliable it will be.

=> Hmm, I don't know who "Kylie" is, but I share your enthusiasm for the Slingbox-system - although I'm not sure that we are talking about the same configuration. Never mind, it works fine for us and we never have to join a thread with futile complaints about a pirated xxxxx, yyyyy or whatever "system".

Washerman, I think you'd do yourself commercially a better favour when you left out shooting on everyone and everything on your path to success for "your" system. We have not as much water from the mains as we used to have in Holland, the roads in TRNC are different, the beer is Efes and not Heineken etc etc etc. And the way we can watch (and the quality of) television in TRNC is - surprise, surprise! - different from Holland also. We are satisfied: we have more choices than a Digiturk subscription can offer and pay within our budget for what we ultimately want: Dutch (news and entertainment) channels and enough UK channels to improve my poor command of the English language...

P.S. Good luck with your business.

P.P.S. I rest my case - my system works fine.

Dear Washerman

'Perfectly watchable' means just that .. I'd say the std was VHS / Standard Definition quality.. if you WANT HD via sling boxes most folks connections in CY wouldn't be fast enough and sat TV would be a better soln..

BTW unless your TV is bigger than 30" you are hard pushed to see any difference and most folks computers screens certainly won't ...

I think that folks can decide for themselves and report back here, eh ?

As for my relationship to Iceman - he is indeed a friend.. he earnt my respect ..but I wasn't aware he earnt his crust installing nilesat systems ..

As for my 'facts' being 'thin on the ground'... I'd say my 'reputation' - reference predicting biz models that will fail in Cyprus was pretty damn accurate, so far... - that's because I knew what I was talking about when I made the prediction ;)

'interesting' that you want Hans to answer your questions yet don't wish to respond to mine re your 'accusation' of a 'vendetta'

Dear Washerman

re msg 39

I haven't gone live, yet.. but I plan to charge retail cost for the slingbox ( two version SD/ HD) and receivers ( choice of SD/ SD PVR and HD PVR*) and 15 / 20 GBP monthly for hosting them - SD / HD 'flavours' covering the costs of the high speed uplink, electricity.. The client will own the kit - so they can even supply and we'll charge hosting only....

*= PVR - means you can record and view when YOU want !

re Nilesat: YES, I know the local rates.. in 'TRNC', RoC .. as would any member - there are at least three companies/ posters regularly quoting .....and I receive copies of several newspapers from all over the Eastern Med / Middle East....

re: my predictions - I am 'out of date', and now - 'everyone knew' ... which is it ;) ?

You don't answer my questions.. an example.. you told us I am 'biased' and post 'untruths'... THIRD time of requesting - can you offer SPECIFICS... ?

BTW.. found someone who will supply AD Sports for 349

A certain member has posted here and claims that I am RIPPING people OFF. I am not going to address this member, he only posts here to gratify his feelings of insecurity. He likes to be known as an expert in pointing a dish at a satellite, so be it - hardly rocket science is it, but then, I'm sure that our dustbin man is very proud of the way that he swings the bin around his head and plants the dustbin in the back of the wagon - nothing wrong with that!

Dear Washerman,

re 44/45

I'm sure someone might read your post and feel 'sorry' for, but as I stated yesterday - dealer price (140 GBP) .. Retail price in UAE / Lebanon ( 175 GBP)

You are charging 546 GBP for the receiver, first year subscription dish and installation

Now even a punter can buy a 1m dish for 26 GBP, a good lnb for 7 GBP - add 25GBP ( generous) for brackets / cabling) - I would be paying a bit less than THAT of course.. I would expect you would, too [ these are prices I can PROVE that are available to RETAIL clients] in Lima(s)sol

I make that a *cost* of under 200 wholesale...

That leaves 346 GBP to cover taxes, labour, etc.

Sat TV is a VERY competitive market and those are EXTREMELY 'healthy' margins..

The first year is the easy part... can you be certain you'll be able to supply next years subscriptions ?

Both mmmmmm and I know he is wrong, he is just not man enough to admit it. Krypton - blind leading the blind.

Here's the web site that mmmmmm quoted the price from : http://www.3pmfooty.com/

and here's what it says:

Abu Dhabi Sports Channel, Subscription Satellite Television cards. The Irdeto card is not available as a standalone card, it is currently only supplied together with a paired Humax High definition receiver (model IR1020HD ).

Have a look for yourself. mmmmmm is a blarney bluffer

It confirms it here too:-

http://www.techdigital.co.uk/products/Abu-Dhabi-ADMC-Sports-Viewing-Card.html

"You will receive a Humax HD receiver with embedded ADMC Sports card"

and here:

http://www.skycards.eu/hd-abu-dhabi-admc-digibox-and-viewing-card

"HD Abu Dhabi ADMC Digibox and Viewing Card"

NOW the facts: They MAY offer a card in the future, but not at the moment. When they do, we will sell them cheaper than anywhere in Europe BUT don't forget, they will not just go in any old receiver!

This is boring, I'm not going to keep this going, it's tiresome. I reckon I've got about two more posts in me - mmmmmm make your next assertion a bit harder to shoot down.

I wish that mmmmmm knew my contacts and our set-up, his chin would hit the floor, but I'm not going to educate him!

Dear Washerman

re msg 58/59

You 'forget' that this IS 'my' industry and I *know* the players from these companies- having met them at Irdeto [ the company supplying the subscription / hardware software ] conferences .. So you'll 'forgive' me if your 'boast' falls a little flat..

You CAN get a card only option - it costs 370AED in UAE = approx 65 GBP - you can even watch it online for only 220 AED ( 40 GBP) [ if you have a Middle Eastern IP addy ]

Now IF you know these folks 'SO well' .. how come one minute you tell us that you aren't 'ripping folk off' - remember the RETAIL price is only 175 GBP - and you are charging 495 GBP in 'TRNC' ?

As ever, when someone is BSing the story never hangs together..

Now, you mentioned that I spoke 'untruths' and this appears to be your first [ failed] attempt to 'prove' I 'fib'..

You haven't told us that you will guarantee next years subs .. BTW..

The very best and hilarious part of your 'research' - remember you are quoting 'grey market' websites - not official sources - is that one of the links YOU posted demonstrates your 'greed' at charging 495 GBP...

Their price is 230 GBP ( a margin of 55 GBP over the retail price in UAE !

I make that 265 GBP LESS than your profiteering RIP OFF con ..

THANKS..... for so neatly proving my point for us... ))

To answer your Q..

If you are a footie sports nut then the Abu Dhabi package with a 1m dish pointed at Nilesat - most Dopi clients will have a smaller dish - but it will work - just less effectively in rain / sand storms - is the best value - if you buy wisely

If you want BBC / ITV then currently the 4.2m is still the best option, but you CAN use a slingbox via the internet... I will offer this next month...

If you can live without BBC 1-4 a 1.8m dish and a SKY HD will give you all the important channels from the UK in HD - stronger channels

If you are on a really tight budget or just come out occasionally - then the free channels from Nilesat in combination with a UK VPN or slingbox soln are great.

Alternatives are Digiturk or Nova Cyprus ( both small dishes )

How's that ? ;)

You have got to laugh at mmmmmm or, feel sorry for him. I quoted the web site that he quoted previously - who the heck does he think he is kidding?

He's quoting prices for products that aren't available. Total and utter ill-informed nonsense!
