WE went down to see Ali at the Grove and barry was playing there. What a disappointment Barry was to Chris and I. His sensitivity to his audience was non existent, he played so loudly that no one could possibly hold a conversation and this volume was supposed to be non intrusive according to Barry. We left leaving a half bottle of wine. The really disappointing thing was the management and staff at the Grove all agreed it was far too loud but were afraid to ask Barry to ease the volume off! A precious evening lossed. Never again Mr Snake, Doug

my opinion is this. I know snakes on many occasions has tried to talk some of these greedy restaurants out of booking him into some of there small venues, do they listen to him,of course not, they go to soyzs bar and see him and see maybe 100 or 130 people, and think to them self, ohh good idea, lets book snakes to fill our restaurant. How can you have a rock musician playing quietly??? or even playing in a cosy restaurant. Have you ever heard or listend to live rock music quiet?? Anyway,if i had any sense i would not take my wife or GF to listen to snakes if you do not like loud music ,better to listen to a crooner like brian delaney, then your wife or GF can hear you telling her how much you really love her!! whist looking at some other eye candy only my humble opinion of course Keep on rocking snakes. Snakes,if you read this, ive heard your playing back at the grove in a few weeks? seems it was there best night they had for a long time .

I have seen Barry at Bar 8.8 and there were none of the problems mentioned and we had a great night. Nearly all the audience stayed until Barry finished.

Zero - next week, I'm gonna come round and I will bring you to listen to my boy play guitar, you may change your mind about snakes then. Playing guitar well is like anything else. It doesn't have to be so loud and distorted to be good, but playing loud with distortion is much easier.

Paul. Look forward to listening to him. But i still stand with my opinion on quiet and loud rock music. Theres very few rock anthems you can listen to quietly. But getting back to thread,i feel he is not for a restaurant the size of most here, also a closed in restaurant,it would be like playing inside a box playing at the grove, echo, distortion, sound bouncing everywhere. I feel the fault lays with the restaurants.

Dougskud thank you I value your opinion ! I would like to please everyone but find it an impossible task especially as i am a "rock musician" and as you rightly say not everyones preference ! the posters advertising the evening said "live rock guitar" and not soft talk along back ground music so beggars belief as to why you were there ! it may be of interest to you that Hussain and the staff at the Grove said it was one of the busiest nights this year and phoned me the next morning to re book me for the 9th October ! kind regards Barry Washerman ! with thoughts of "here we go again" my dad loved me too ! regards !!!

Hi Snakes Some very fair points being made and I would love to be at the concert on Saturday. I was surprised to read your comments about Hussain as it was he who I referred too about not wanting to upset you by asking you to ease it down. But as they say, money talks and if they can increase their turnover by having you perform there then of course that is what they will do. I only hope they remember for 52weeks each year their core business is providing good food within a pleasant environment. Success can so easily be lossed!! regards Doug

washerman - sorry to disagree with you -as a man who has seen most of the guitar greats live and strummed with a few of them along the way - i would say Snakes is "an old pro" (in the very nicest way way possible) and the best entertainer in the TRNC, by a country mile...... i saw your lad play with Pearl - and they are entertaining - as to who is "the best" - who cares ?? The best will always be objective - Joe Satriani is probably a better guitar payer than Jimmy Page - BUT Satriani hasn't written anything as good as Page..... Oh- and for the reccord - its a pitty you didn't put as much effort into your "internet club" business as you do into slagging people off.... in my short time i dealt with you - you were in-efficient, obnoctious and with a total lack of customer care the likes of which i have never experienced in 30 years of business..... if i were you, i would keep my gob tightly shut, in case more disgruntled internet club customers come out of the wood work..

msg 1 1.Did you know Barry was playing? 2. Have you ever heard of ROCK music? I suggest you read the blackboard in front of the restaurant,it said" BARRY SNAKES ROCK MUSIC"You have what we all have, the ability to "Choose",I suggest you use it!!!! I personally think "BARRY" is brilliant, but may be the people who book him are more concerned with "BUMS on SEATS" and should be more careful with there booked acts .....Rock on Barry....

stilluvithere - yes you can come. I will ring you. I know that you really appreciate good guitaring. Dan, can't play here to an audience because the work permit situation doesn't allow it and I am not prepared to let him take the risk. Others flout the law and stick the cash in their back-pocket, but then, each to his own. Richard Curry (the organiser of Saturday's concert) was offered but declined Dan's services. He offered to open the show with a guitar solo that would have blown the audience away with Canon in (D) Rock version by Gerry C - the audience have missed out!

I have Total respect for Barry, both personally, and Musically. Cant wait to see him at the Ampitheatre. But I am at a loss as to why any Restaurant needs to put live entertainment on. I judge a Restaurant on its food and service, We will actually avoid Restaurants with live music, I don't think the two things go together. I feel that all you need when having a meal is background music.

RE msg 15, negnick: (...) your service was off more than it was on, with speeds up and down like a yo yo - ad your attitude if god forbid you rang to complan - SHITE (...) => I agree with the first part of your sentence, but I can't support the second part. Paul Alldred or one of his partners or staff came when I called, which however was far too often and after three months still with unsatisfactory results. I finally wasn't interested in "the technical reasons" anymore and quit the club. No hard feelings, but just glad I took the right decision.

I must say I found the 'review' a little harsh and it made me wonder why dougskud felt the NEED to post the review at all ? As someone involved in a 'ding-dong' with a participant on here in another thread - although the subject matter is not as subjective - this might seem ironic..... but people have different tastes.. I've read reviews of films/ artists that meant I didn't want to see 'em / it and was pleasantly surprised if 'dragged along', and vice-versa.. Wouldn't it be better to have a quiet word with the proprietor - give your opinion - and let the owner decide whether he'll book Snakes again ?

paul. message 12. Just been thinking, ive just found out that the tax regulations have been changed,so its possible to be employed part time.Dont know if new regulations or ive just heard about them, but monthly tax is lower im told. Would it not be in your interest to find a decent venue some where and approach them with the offer of paying your own sons part time taxes so he can play at that venue. Part time may mean 20 or 21 hours per week,im sure if he is a crowd puller,he will make his taxes back that you would have paid. Then if all you are saying about your lad is true,we all get our cake and eat it,we get to see and listen to your son and snakes at diffrent venues across the island. Every 1 happy as piginshit

Re Snakes message 8 ........the posters advertising the evening said "live rock guitar" You cannot play Rock music quietly. No body can, just go and see AC/DC Iron Maiden, Led Zep.......... As much as I love rock - if I wanted to go out and have a quiet meal with the wife I wouldn't go to a place that has Rock music...'cos it is always loud. And please do not try and compare musicians - they are all different...that's what's so good about LIVE music

Is that the best you can do!,It is your rather unhealthy adoration of your son,s guitar virtuosity that is the issue...And insulting SNAKES shows that it is possibly you that you have issues..There is probably a Freudian syndrome to explain your behaviour. .................. But I think you are just a son promoting malcontent...

I wish not to get engrossed into the debate here but would just like to state for the record. Msg 12 Washerman... if you wish to name names, please spell my name right!!!!! and I recall you emailed me asking if your group could play at the concert and if there was some way I could contact a former work partner of your to see if there way any mileage in this offer. There was no comment on what would be played nor who would play, only your reforming group. No agreement or offer was made or declined about said appearance. If all the offers to play were accounted for... the concert may still be running next Monday. Msg 10... sorry but I was very lucky to see in my mind the greatest rock player not one but twice... the late Mr James (Jimi) Hendrix

Richard Currie (scruffdog) on a previous thread here, I made a donation of 200TL and an offer to auction one of my TV packages worth 1245TL for, what I believed to be a good cause. You didn't auction the donation that I made or, collect my donation - is my money not good enough? Are you working in the best interests of your charity or, to your own personal preferences?

Mr Snakes, Never seen you play, i used to run a music bar in Blackpool and showcase live music 6 nights a week soft rock bands mainly Bon Jovi, Queen,Quo covers etc. You play challenging music in that songs like Parissiene Walkway's, Bohemian Rhapsody and Stairway to heaven aint easy to strum through it requires talent of which you must have plenty. I once had a band who would pack out the venue around 950 people who would pay to hear them play hotel California by the Eagles chord for chord perfect, followed by their party piece "Duelling Banjo's" Oh Happy day's, Keep on rocking sir you get paid for doing something you enjoy, then you are the luckiest ba**ard alive.

Oh steve you cheeky sod, however i do have a very soft spot for daniel. Not for his cheesy music but years ago I was asked by an irish radio presenter to see how funds could be raised for a very poor family in derry. They had 9 children and the second youngest was dying from lukemia. I advised them to contact make a wish foundation. This they did but they mainly dealt with mainland britian. The station contacted me again and asked if I would make an appeal on the station.I didnt I wrote To Daniel. The response was amazing. I went to Derry to see the family, they were so lovely. I sat with the young Gary and asked him if you could have a wish what would it be. His reply to see Daniel O Donnell. He was 9. I contact the management company again and told them the wish. His mum Theresa also told me he would love to go to disney world florida. I was phoned within an hour and told to get the family to letterkenny the next day. Took some arranging. We went to the hotel as agreed no Daniel, he

He had lunch with the family and then presented them with tickets to go to america. The father wouldnt go as he knew he would be saying goodbye to his son. Gary was all over me kissing me and wouldnt let me go. The dad wouldnt give in and I got a call from theresa saying she couldnt manage 9 alone would i go. After a great deal of though I said yes to give that boy and family some lasting memories. Well in Florida he became more attached to me, making me presents every day. They ran out of money and I only had my credit cards which i maxed up. I found out Daniel was in USA, so rang him. He flew to florida gave them money and stayed a day with them. At this time Gary had 3 months to live he did a year. I went for the funeral. To this day I carry his photo with Daniel. Im still in touch with the family. If he did that for one family what |

This thread is very misleading... it's not about Barry being disappointing just about rock music not being suitable for restaurant background music... To be frank we often have to ask establishments to turn down piped music because we can't hold a civilised conversation at normal volume levels and would be hoarse by the end of the evening... I love music and spend most of my time compiling compendia of Jazz, Blues. Pop and Rock. (Yeah I know some think I spend all my time on Cyprus44 - but I don't) What I don't want when I'm eating at a social gathering is to strain my voice and hearing just to communicate... The fault really lies with The Grove in this situation.... "Music too loud at The Grove" would have been more correct.

If you would email I will arrange, I would not like to auction your offer as the little guys with little cash tends to get washed away by the guy with lots of cash in there back pocket. A raffle lets more enter and have the hope of winning. Also if Dan is at the concert... tell him to look me out! On behalf of Girne Rehabilitasyon Merkezi I thank you again for your offer. |

I have seen Barry play on several occasions and enjoyed his music emensley. I have heard criticism from some quarters that say that the music is too loud. My answer to these people is that the venues are full because the majority appreciate his music and the volume. Therefore I suggest that if you want a cosy night with background music so that you can chat ,then choose a venue that is not advertising a rock musician. Rock on!!!

Scruffdog, at the time, I informed one of your friends by email to ask you to contact me about my offer, but you didn't. In any event, Snakes knew about it and he was holding the microphone on the night. As I didn't here from you (and don't forget, you promised to email me before the end of the week and didn't), we applied to set up a charitable association ourselves (for another very worthy cause) and that is where the system will be used to raise some money. I'm sorry, that this time, you missed the boat - good luck with tonight's show or, break-a-leg as they say! My offer of 200TL still stands - please arrange to collect it. Gwyn tells me that you contacted her a few weeks ago and asked about a free internet connection for the charity. I will enquire whether eXtend or Nethouse Networks is willing to co-operate and let you know.

Hi Everyone good morning. In response to MMMMM message 27. Having got back to England yesterday I posted several messages about my experiences on holiday. The bulk of these messages were complimentary. My only dissapointment was our evening at the Grove where the music spoiled our enjoyment, and as you will have read in my post I did have a very dissapointing discussion with the management about the volume of the music. I do agree with an earlier post where the title should have focussed on the Grove and it's management. I would however add. Barry I am not a musician but let's not kid a kidder, do you really mean a man with all your experience cannot find an hour of music (during the time people are eating) that could be performed at sound levels that would provide background sound rather than shining the spotlight on you and obliterating all possibility of conversation. Just a thought were there any young children staying at the Grove trying to sleep? D

DougSkud, Barry is not here to answer you. He is with all the other performers at the Girne Amphitheater setting up all the equipement and sound checks. Yes, maybe you should of focussed on The Grove and their Management. Many people enjoyed the evening. Unfortunetely you and your wife did not. Barry did reduce the volume and played much more 'tamer' songs in the first half, it is most unfortunate that it is such a small venue surrounded by walls where sound bounces off. As already pointed out, he was asked to perform there and indeed asked again the following morning to come back on the 9th of October because it was one of their best nights!! I sat by 2 small babies, both were extremely content and slept through his performance!! Your heading ' Barry Snakes bitterly disappointing' was downright nasty! In fact, I have just spoken to Barry and he has told me that most of the people involved down at the Amphitheatre think what an idiot you are for starting such a stupid post!! Regards.

| Hi Mrs Snakes I'm sure you have an open mind, indeed having read your posting this is clearly evident. I have already accepted that the title of my post should have focussed on the Grove and it's management rather than Barry, but hey, all publicity is good publicity. That said a competent professional surely has to take into his/her music/sound set up the conditions of the location of the performance. In this Barry was found totally lacking. To have any long term success he will have to adapt rather than trotting out " rock music is only played loud" Just a thought. How many bookings will Barry get when the restaurants move indoors? | Doug, This is just your opinion I know! Barry has already had long term success for over 40 years having had the privelige of playing with talented musicians of great fame. Thank you for your advice, I will pass it on to Barry later!! As for bookings inside......who cares? Not us at the moment, we have more important serious issues to contend wih, how many turn up is the least of our worries!! Barry has always been approached to play, it mostly has never been his choice here but believe it or not, there are quite a few people here that love to here him play and we have always been extremely grateful and touched for the support and kindness shown. PS. Barry Snakes makes the best chips I have ever tasted!! Regards, Helena Snakes!! |

Dear Mr. Dougskud. You just can't leave it can you? Keep digging. You can see from the posts that nearly all replies have been in favour of Barry. It's obvious to most people that the Management of the Grove paid you "lip service". They tried to keep you happy, but it's Barry they want to keep them afloat, not you. I strongly disagree with your comment that Barry was lacking when you suggest he needs to take into various scenarios. He did. Most people went because of him and his music. He could have kept you happy by keeping the volume low, but then most customers (and the Management) would have been unhappy. Regarding long-term success, this thread will ensure many more people who want to be entertained by Barry, will know exactly what to expect. For that you can be thanked, albeit, indirectly. Finally, why ask "How many bookings will Barry get when the restaurants move indoors?". Does this actually concern you, or Barry?

For what it's worth Jimmy Page, (No 2 on the Gibson Guitars all-time top 50 guitarists) is apparently annoyed by the contention that Led Zeppelin were purely a Heavy Metal band when fully one third of their repertoire was acoustic. Joe Satriani does not appear in the top 50... which surprised me - but not as much as Roy Harper's exclusion... given his undoubted influence on the likes of Page and Dave Gilmour. Those who haven't listened to Harper's back catalogue should - truly stunning guitar work accompanied by crystal clear lyrics and great line-ups...

By now most comments have been made, but surely the words "rock guitarist" should have been a clue as to what to expect, after all the words "piano bar" would have equally been self explanatory. Barry is without doubt the best entertainer on the island and in our opinion one of the best guitarist anywhere. "You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time." Don't worry about them, we love you. Good luck tonight from both of us x

mess114 - Sorry Groucho, you are wrong........ Led Zeppelin were not a "heavy Metal" band - the term wasn't invented when they were around.. They were a "rock" band - or some would say "heavy" rock band...... It is widely accepted that Judas Priest were the first band to play the style that ultimately was called "heavy Metal"

| Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues-rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo. The first heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple attracted large audiences, though they were often critically reviled, a status common throughout the history of the genre. | I thought this post was about how shite snakes is ??? youve all been round the block and slagged every one off with personal insults about people businesses and their kids WTF Dan is a very talented young musician and his dad thinks so to, I feel the same way about my Jamie when I first saw him on stage with Funky Monkey when he was 12 years old Snakes is a very talented Rock guitarist and many many people love to listen to him especially LOUD, he has also made a very good living playing that guitar and even penned a no1 hit for Annie Lennox, Nuff said we are all entitled to our opinions but please keep it clean, AND REAL I look forward to a future gig featuring Dan & Snakes perhaps playing Jerry C canon rock cannon, how about it guys Have a great day and enjoy your music, whatever it maybe XX |

I think there is a slight difference between .. "Barry Snakes bitterly disappointing" & "Being disappointed when seeing Barry Snakes" I was disappointed by the fact I thought he was too loud .. Play the guitar loud by all means .. But don't try singing over it .. Sorry if I appear to be in a minority .. Next time can always turn down my "hearing aid" or listen to Barry in the next bar .. Just my opinion ..

Mark, my wife emailed Snakes and asked him about a collaberation, but it was refused. Dan is the new kid on the block - he wasn't even asked to play at last night's concert. Even though we made a personal appeal to Scruffdog. Unfortunately, higher powers are at work, but don't worry, you will get the chance to see Dan soon. Sorry, but I am proud of my son. AND despite every Saturday headline from Cyprus Today being reported on here, yesterday's was not, no-one has even mentioned it - pathetic!
