Is Ercan the most expensive place to eat in the world? Two rolls and two do it yourself cups of tea 38YTL!

Better have a word with Weatherpersons about their Stansted operation, complete rip off but no where else to go! Promised a reply by email asap but still awaiting about a complaint to be addressed! Tim Martin must have gone into the construction industry having failed at Law and over inflated his share price. Don't trust all Kiwi's!

Re message two - I agree, we never ever buy food at an airport! Many, many years ago we were advised by a travel rep not to buy any food or drink at Ercan.

There is a very nice Italian restaurant at Stansted Airport. It is self service and everything is fresh. They also do a great breakfast.

At Manchester there is a Greggs at No 1 departures, we check in then go to Arrivals in the lift, turn left through the doors and there it is. you can eat in or out at the same price you pay in their shops in the towns. Bacon, Sausage barms with different coffee and tea, plenty of choice of sandwiches which we take on board with us.

So basically we have no answer as to whether it is the most expensive in the world which is not really surprising as I doubt that anyone has tried them all but there does seem to be an agreement that all airports are rip offs which strangely enough is something I have noticed in the past, maybe it is because you have passed passport control and in most cases you can't go back out again so if you wish to eat you have to pay the price, supply and demand. It might also be worth considering the fact that if you are on one of the budget charter flights to europe you have to pay for food and drink (please correct me if I am wrong, I don't use them) and I understand that is also rather expensive and very limited in choice.

You tend to find the same on trains, charter coaches, ferries in fact pretty much anywhere that you have no other choices, I would say it is clever business practice but maybe that is just me.

I should imagine that the cost of rental and other overheads are going to be much higher in an airport than on the high street so increased prices are to be expected. That said, the prices are ridiculous at some airports and as others have said on here, they work on the assumption that they have a captive audience and can pretty much charge what they like.

Simple answer is to eat before you leave or take a packed lunch with you, as long as you continue to buy from them they will continue to charge exhorbitant prices.

More choice at Stansted if you eat before going through security, prices still expensive though

Many business travellers, who probably outnumber the domestic ones, are able to charge these rip-off airport cafe prices to their expense accounts - so, it seems the rip-off will continue!

Granted there won't be too many business travellers to Ercan/TRNC!

I wish it was just at airports and other terminals. What about the prices of some of the crap which is served and called food at motorway service stations. I believe the leases and/or taxes involved in these outlets are extortionate.

I always buy a Boots Meal Deal at UK ariports which represents excellent value. Admittedly they're priced at the London price of £3.49 as opposed to £2.99 in the rest of the UK, but a decent sandwich or wrap, branded bottle of drink, and snack (crisps, fruit or cake) for £3.49 at a UK airport - bargain!

All I can advise is fly Business class and go into the airline lounge. Snacks and drinks are provided including alcoholic drinks. Some even have showers allowing you to freshen up before getting on the plane.

And about lounges you are do not necessarily have to fly business to gain access to them some credit/debt cards allow you entry or you can pay a nominal fee before you get the airport and go into a lounge.

But as for Ercan you stuffed

Go to Ismir or bordrum in Turkey, biggest rip off you have ever seen, double what you pay anywhere I think I paid around 22lira for two small fantas, must say it was all the lira I had left over so did not worry too much. but got cought with overlimit on baggage we had 20kg overweight it cost me 1300lira nearly dropped, we were allowed 30kg each going over to Turkey but going back to Oz on Turkish airlines it was only a 20kg limit, and the sourpoose woman in charge said if I did not like it to bad, just go down to the baggage dept and pick up our bags and leave the airport, she just couldn't care less, my fault for going Turkish airways, and the flight was crap really poor food and terrible staff on board, it was a plesure to get onboard a Qantas flight for the 2nd part of the journey great food friendly service and great staff.

I can't remember the name of the airport in India we were at four years ago but I remember a pack of Pringles (large normal size) was the equivalent of £7!!

I had a Smirnoff and Tonic and a slice of lemon drizzle cake at Ercan. They wanted 25 lira, when I said I only had 10 lira left she shrugged and took it. It is very expensive though, I tend to take a sandwich or a banana or something these days. But food is not really a priority for me. All airports are the same, captive audience and all that you know!.

I'm surprised about the adverse comments about Turkish Airlines as I've heard very good reports about them and given the amount of money they throw at CNN & BBC World in advertising I cannot see them letting themselves down for not being a 'star'! I'll report back in December when I use them.

msg 29 - agree ataturk is ridiculous. Sab gochen (excuse the spelling) is 1/3 the price.

If at ataturk, pay for lounge, 50 TL. As much tea, coffee, beer, spirits and snacks as you want.

Two daft pints and a 'cheese sandwich' covers that

Not found an aiport yet that gives you good value its called having a captive audiance

W H Smiths in Stanstead for 2 prepacked sandwiches, 2 pack of very light weight crips and a KIt Kat £10.00

But one of he worst eating areas in my experiance for cost, and quality of seating was Dubai, the eating area if not still is like an old works canteen (past experiance not been for 2 years)

And we all thought Dick Turpin was dead

Re Message 30

Brinsley

I can only state what our experience was on this flight, the food was unedible, we had a look around and most of the other passengers meals were left untouched, no I didn't like it one bit. and I said we had a good flight on Qantas, only because the Turkish flight was so bad. I must stop whinging
