Water is a massive commodity that is becoming more and more valuable as the years go by,and is such a tremendous bargaining tool.Turkey are also drilling for oil close to Kyrennia.Lots of positives going on out there,

Last I heard (from memory) the hold up was the people in the area of Turkey where the dam is being built were holding out for more compensation. Presumably, they have come to some agreement. I wonder if any will be pumped over to the ROC. I seemed to remember, going back some years, that an exchange of water for electricity was muted. Anyone know any more?

sloan/Msg 8:

Turkish/TC water for GC electricity was mooted, I remember reading.

Now, they say that the water pipeline will, ideally, include an electric cable.

That sounds like good sense. I'm guessing that they have some sort of hydro-electric scheme in mind, so as to get dual use from the pumping station, obviously turbine generators.

Now I know some people talk tosh on C44. Oil off Kyrenia/Girne? Not a chance, I've seen the geology reports for the whole Island. The only prospect for either gas or oil is off the tip of the Karpaz towards Syria and that's marginal.

Yes, of course, Tenakoutou, it's 'mooted' not 'muted' ..... yet another senior moment! They are coming fast and furious these days! Apologies to the spelling gurus out there!

looks like its going to happen this thank god , i read the other week in the english turkish huriyett that there was trouble with some turkish residents in the area where the feeder reservoir is being constructed and a protest was in the being. apparently some peoples homes have to be knocked down and some will be left but will be eighty feet below fresh water ( a normal procedure when constructing a deep dam ).

good news for all the expat coarse anglers tho we will have a permenantly full getikoy dam to fish in !

One does ones best guys, just seems to me that there are too many doubting Thomases on here. This is probably the biggest thing to happen to Northern Cyprus in years, and still we get the knockers, moaners, and whingers. Why cant we see it for what it is,two feet in the 21st century,

Paul.

Hi Paul

It shows that Turkey is staying connected to Cyprus. This is a rather large investment, one that it would not want to walk away from, once implemented. It would not seem like a parting gift.

with Turkey making such a large investment, I don,t think they will hand it back to the south at a drop of a hat,

Which i am more than happy with, I have worked and lived in the South many years ago, I,m happy where i am. well done in finding the info Paul.

In fact Turkey is making a tangible physical connection to Cyprus, the umbilical cord has been reattached, not cut. Perhaps this is highly symbolic.

Some experts claim that even if the pipeline is connected it will be a short term fix and will not help with the problem of the desertification of Cyprus which is happening under your noses. Many will accuse them of being climate change alarmists so keep on washing your cars and filling your pools.

message 21:

mark you are perhaps wise to be cynical, just as I was about:

those "100 year leases" you thought could be granted to tc's in former gc properties,

or even your mind-boggling "20% of kyenia's future population could be greek cypriot"

...let alone all of that "I'd like to see turkey in the eu" posturing...and does sarkozy know?

but if the pipeline, the cable, the dams, and the atomic plant at mersin are eventually built,

it'll confirm to even the most blinkered individual that turkey is really in cyprus for keeps,

would it not?

Shame the Turkish press are telling it differently. According to latest reports I have read the Damm is on hold as the natives in the area to be flooded are refusing to move out if they don't get more cash. Who do you believe? Not the TRNC Govt that'S for sure.

STOP PRESS!:

CYPRUS NEWS DECEMBER 1975.

WATER --- FROM TURKEY!

Mr Kenan Atakol the Turkish Cypriot Minister of energy & natural resources has recently invited five civil engineering firms, four of them British to prepare a feasibility study for an undersea pipeline to supply potable water to Northern Cyprus.

Long before the 1974 intervention the United Nations, backed by the World Bank suggested a water pipeline from Turkey.

So there is hope after all!

The Butler.

true, there are reports about locals unhappy to have their villages flooded

but I'd look at it this way: turkish industry expanded apace in recent years,

and there is a major railroad project underway from baku to kars...

this will eventually connect up with the tunnel planned under the bosphorus

as regards their political/military/human investment in cyprus,

unless the country decides to throw in the towel totally and no sign of that,

I think they will have to continue with the scheme even just to save face

naturally there may well be quite a few bumps and glitches along the way

but that is par for the course with all advanced technology such as this:

once called "the prussia of asia minor" I'm sure turkey will see this through

after all there were many on cyprus for whom the penny never dropped in '67,

as troop transports loaded: and then unloaded in iskenderun after us pleading

...and even in 1974, before our guarantor did what they had said they might

paul,

according to press reports nasa is looking for volunteers for a one-way flight to mars

and if that seems incredible,

it'd be possible to make plenty of space to install loads of greek cypriots in the trnc

...simply by shifting all the piles of rubbish

meanwhile one or two folk on other threads still chunter on as if the eu leadership

really do want to turkey to join in our lifetimes, the cyprus "problem" notwithstanding

so the pipeline pipedream may not be as far-fetched as seems, at odds of 5 to 4 on:

and shall we say 100 to 8 for a russian gas pumping station in the karpaz by 2025?
