The President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Dervis Eroglu has sent a letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon expressing the Cyprus Turks views regarding the Cyprus issue. The letter dated 1st of November emphasizes that progress can be made and a solution can be found to the Cyprus problem by the end of the year if the Greek Cypriot side takes progressive steps and shows the necessary political will.

He said if the Greek Cypriot side stops making unnecessary statements and focuses its energy on the Cyprus talks, then a comprehensive solution can be found to the Cyprus problem by the end of the year.

Referring to the Greek Cypriot leader Dimitris Christofias’ speech made at the 65th general assembly of the United Nations, Eroglu said “Christofias referring to Turkey’s timely intervention in 1974 as an ‘invasion’ and its continued existence in Cyprus as an ‘occupation’ does not reflect the historical realities on the island.”

The President emphasized that “no Security Council resolution has ever referred to Turkey’s rightful intervention as an invasion or its continued existence on the island as an ‘occupation’”.

“The Turks of Cyprus were repeatedly subjected to Greek Cypriot savagery and were part of the ethnic cleansing campaign enforced by Greek Cypriots” said Eroglu and noted that the Turkish forces on the island were the only deterrent that is preventing the repetition of the past.

Referring to the Greek Cypriot side’s insistence on using the Republic of Cyprus title even after 1963, Mr. Eroglu said “this stance is far from any legal and ethical basis”.

Eroglu said ‘despite this, the Turks of Cyprus have for years been continuing the Cyprus talks with good will and have either initiated or accepted the peace plans that have been put forward’.

He also expressed the belief that the tripartite meeting in New York will have a positive effect on the ongoing Cyprus talks..
