Sounds good

http://famagusta-gazette.com/breaking-news-turkey-mulls-opening-ports-to-cyprus-p10992-69.htm

he European Commission is reported to have proposed opening two chapters in Turkey’s EU accession negations in exchange for the agreement that Ankara opens one of its ports and airspace to Cypriot shipping and aviation.

A report on Cyprus state radio cited a Turkish television channel as reporting that the Commission promised that the energy and justice chapters would be opened – providing the port of Istanbul was opened to Cyprus shipping and airspace opened to Cypriot traffic by the first week in December.

The report also stated that President Christofias will allow for Turkey negations to proceed unhindered, by not exercising his veto right.

The Turkish government is reported to have accepted the proposals on the condition that international flights are allowed to fly into the occupied areas of Cyprus.

State radio reported the proposal also includes the proposal to open

Elko "Nothing will happen" Is that due to the Chicago convention being the governing body that controls the air space. They will block this ,so no deal will be done,

Paul.

With which mentality do the GCs block this idea. It is costing them millions to go round Turkey in flights alone never mind the shipping. I've got an idea, why doesn't Turkey open the ports regardless and charge the RoC planes and ships 1000 times the charges to anybody else. They are allowed to charge as they wish are they not?

How many times can a small article include the words... reporting, reported, report, proposal & proposed.

Then the last sentence reads...

"State radio reported the proposal also includes the proposal to open direct trade"

I doubt it will happen as TR has to open it's ports, anyway.. ( it sighed up to allow ALL EU members access to it's ports and skies)

The 'compromise' from the GCs will be a promise not to use their veto...

The 'direct flights' to 'TRNC' will have to be tied into a settlement to get around the UN Security Council Resolutions - declaring 'TRNC' legally invalid... TR KNOWS this so we know the answer already :(

Mark

Turkey doesn't have to do anything, as much as France doesn't implement half of what it's signed up to from EU Brussels directives!

I wrote to the foreign office a few weeks ago about the trade sanctions and direct flights to get the new govenments take on this.

I had a reply earlier this week and it was the usual blah blah blah answer but they did say that direct flights would not happen unless the ROC said it would.

Now ask yourselves is that going to happen !

At least this is another attempt to get things moving.

OK it has been mooted before and not worked, but in the present climate it's worth trying for it again.

Let's keep hoping and not descend into the gloom every time some way out of the impasse is proposed.
