Good news for all us Midlanders! Turkish Airlines start direct flights from Istanbul to Birmingham on December 15th 2008. Prices look good too. Less than £200 return at certain times and the dearest appear to be no more than £250.

That seems to be a very good price.

You can pick up cheap flights from Istanbul to Ercan or is that a little complicated for you?

No its not complicated for me, you might want to look at the gaps between flights to Istanbul and onward flights to the TRNC, if you like spending a lot of time in Istanbul airport then fair enough but I have flown into Istanbul from a few countries and believe me Istanbul airport maybe a novelty to some but not to me.

The drive from Stansted or a couple of hours in the comfort of Istanbul airport? Sounds good choice to me.

Oilman

I used to work in the oil & gas industry and I guess from your nickname that you may do also. North Sea? Middle East? Asia?. Just finished 4 years in Azerbaijan.

Yes just had two years in Kazakhstan but have had a few trips to Baku. Enjoyed it. Done India, Far East, Mid East, South Africa and a little time in Venezuela. Not your end of it though but oilfield supplies. Called it a day now and live here permanently. Had a place here for 10 years. Wasn't being sarcastic by the way about the being complicated bit. Read it back afterwards and it came out that way! Apologies!

Excellent news! Birmingham is such an easy airport to fly from. Have also been to Istanbul airport and it really is quite comfortable, but expensive for food!
