Your solar panels should be facing south to get maximum efficiency. Also, there are often other issues with solar panel installation. They should be in direct sunlight so being in any way shaded won't help. The pipes too and from the hot tank must run continuously uphill. Any dips at all and performace will be seriously degraded.

We can fix all these problem inexpensively.

"The pipes... from the hot tank must run continuously uphill." My hot tank is on the roof, do I have to shower on the roof?

My solar panels, although facing South, only really produce hot water in the afternoon. Is there any real gain in having an additional panel facing East or South East to catch the morning sun and heat the water all day?

What would be the advanatge of placing a hotwater tank higher that what was originally positioned ? some have done this on a complex and I was wondering what the advantage of this is ? the disadvantage is that they look unsightly !!

Vaughan,

You need an automated system so that the solar panels will follow the sun. Actaully I saw a mechanical system doing that on much lighter solar panels that produced electricity.

Just an idea, get an old "activator arm" from one of the satellite shops used in motorised satyellite dishes and make your panels rotate slowly to follow the sun.

Well I do not know why it should be so complicated.

Our panels face approximately due East and when the sun comes up and starts to move around we will normally have a tankful of hot water by about 9-10am and if it is a warm day then the water will stay hot for most of the day.

No problem here.

Solar panels, should face"True" south (not due south) for optimum performance ...

My panels face East South east and as Alsncakjack has said "get no problem with hot water". I get hot water all day. But I have the new Sucho Solar water system its great. Even with very little sun I get good hot water.

I think its only 4-5 degrees difference between true south and compas south for Cyprus, it hardly makes a difference. See http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/geomagmodels/Declination.jsp for perfect accuracy

No, I don't think that will ne necessary though we do know of a villa in Zeytenlik with a Jacussi on the roof. As you know, I was referring to the pipes between the solar panels and the hot tank.
