Folks, has anyone taken back cheese to the UK via Ercan please?

I'm asking as there are restrictions if the cheese is not from a EU country.

Thanks

Thanks to both of you. Disappointing though it is I have to accept the situation. I do however wonder if the same packet of Hellim (as an example) somehow obtains an acceptable production standards by virtue of being transported via Larnaca

I have taken loads back via Ercan, never had a problem (in a M&S cool bag). But I was sweating as I went through customs in the UK..... if they catch you they take it away and tell you off !!!

Only did it to please the mother- in -law. All the TC's do it, but I don't understand why as you can buy it in a deli in the UK.

She got caught at one of the London airports......after that she never asked me again !!! Lol.

I know what you mean Metin. How do I explain to my mum that it is not allowed (having tried "it isn't allowed)

The best idea I've had so far is to feign a recent dislike for the stuff..... ;-)

What is surprising is that she has successfully posted dried Mulihiya to me in the UK ! (sorry for going off topic).

No you are not allowed to take it into the UK. Twice sniffer dogs have been just before customs and stopped no end of people on my flight. The dog handlers made them open all their baggage and removed the food .....I don't know what happened to them. There were notices up saying it was illegal to take it into the UK. I presume the notices are still there.

We all probably take some risks with wha5 we bring back but if you want to know what you can and cant try to look at http://www.dontbringmeback.direct.gov.uk/index.html - search it well

Some examples of what you can from Turkey are Olive oil, Olives, Turkish Delight

Some you are not supposed to bring in for personal use, gift or business import include Halloumi cheese, Pastirma, Sucuk also signs at airports include thing like spuds tec.

* Though the whole of Cyprus is part of the EU, goods from any area of Cyprus not under the effective control of the Republic of Cyprus are treated as non-EU imports.

This is up to date as at today.

Last time I went Ercan to Istanbul, Istanbul to Birmingham. I watched a nice T C gentelman being parted from

his cheese, his olive oil, his home made lemon juice at Istanbul in the transit lounge. He obviously got it out through Ercan with no trouble, so I guess if you don't have to get off the plane, you may get away with it.

It was in his hand luggage!!
