Fascinating map - pity that Hans is not on to comment about it as I'm sure he could contribute to our understanding.

What is not made clear is the actual population in each area as that might show a higher number of Turkish Cypriots per village or Hectare than you might expect (especially in comparison to a similar area showing Greek Cypriot population) as this information is far too non-specific.

Tom,

Am I missing something here, is there a reason why Hans is not commenting.

I stand to be corrected by the moderators but I suspect DC may have been banned after this post.

This thread is not about why members have been banned.

Re-read the title and the first posting and discuss.

Great post thanks very interesting.

I have a few observations and questions.

The title talks about 1960 survey who was this commissioned by and what was it for?

The "invasion" was in 1974 after the survey so why is that included because it was not part of the original survey?

All the place names are in Greek.

Has this map been produced for a purpose or is it just for information?

And was there anything go on in 2002 to need this type of map?

Following on from James comment Msg 12 - If it had been drawn up by the then UK authorities it would probably been in miles and kilometers or miles only (Britain was imperial then)

Some might say it was not an invasion in 1974 but that one of the three countries who were internationaly appointed to oversee the peace and agreements between the Cypriot people felt it had to intevene because there was no peace.

How accurate was the census?

How many illiterate people took part/did not take part?

The results and this 'map' could so easily have been doctored is it reliable?

It's already been doctored to show the T/C military line since it was produced... makes it somewhat irrelevant as evidence.

The farming community was more T/C than G/C as a percentage of each ethnic groups constitution according to some studies.

If you add up all the areas where T/Cs lived and then make the not too dramatic assumption that farmers generally have larger plots than non-farmers you would probably end up with something approaching 30% T/C land. A figure much vaunted in the G/C press a while back - much to the annoyance of some who would have you believe that the whole island is Greek.

So you would need to understand the work profile of the demographics to truly establish land mass totals by ethnic group.

Groucho (16) Excellent points. Cyprus only became a fully-fledged Republic in August 1960, when Britain formally handed over the reins. Everything was in a state of flux prior to that historic event as the outgoing Colonial administration shut up shop and the new Republican Ministers began to sort themselves, and their priorities out. Who on earth would have found time or even been able to conduct a census at that time ?? Having lived/worked on the island for 20 years in my youth, this 1960's map has got all the south side (Greek) place names spelled wrongly - for that period in time. Up till at least 1974, 'Pafos' was always Paphos, 'Morfou' was Morphou and - horror of horrors - 'Kyreneia' was always Kyrenia. Some serious doctoring has gone on with this map but whether from the GC or TC side, I can't honestly tell. The map spellings do however coincide with how towns are currently signboarded down south, so......??
