I have an HDTV just feel like i'm not using its full potential. i watch movies that i have downloaded from the internet on it and i have a VPN as well so i can watch UKTV but like all these things i want to be able to just turn the TV on and watch something random without having to decide. Sound really lazy i know! So i ask you all this 1) Which provider gives the best? (signal, price, amount of channels and service) 2) Who provides HD boxes and channels? 3) Does anyone have an HD box and is it worth the cost? I'm hoping that the responses will be as helpful and informative as they normally are. Thanks in advance

Manta, your question raises as many questions as answers.. If you want true UK TV then the only choice is taking out a SKY package.. as you can't get BBC HD in CY You can get some Eng lang HD content from Digiturk or NOVA Cyprus There are Arab TV services like Orbit Showtime and Abu Dhabi TV that only need a 1m dish - but -like SKY you ain't supposed to have 'em in Cyprus - ( we await a European Court of Justice - use of EU services in UK from other EU based services that will prob change all that re SKY.... ) That won't apply to non EU sourced sat TV, however.. IF the non CY based sat TV cos find you are using their service in Cyprus they MAY turn you off .. To get SKY you'll need a 1.8m dish and to get BBC ( non HD) and ITV you need a 4.2m So, it will cost more to get true UK TV, but you get nearly 50 HD channels - is the cost worth it .. ? That is up you you !

Personally I am happy to watch 'normal' TV in standard def, I use VPN and iplayer, 4oD, ITV player and watch 5 for that. If I really want to I can watch iplayer HD content but NOT streaming, only via downloading first. Where I am very fussy about HD quality is movies. These I watch in HD either from Blue Ray player and disks or download from the net, at around 8-10GB per full HD movie. In 'half HD' they are areound 3-5GB per movie.

The same can be said for SKY and recieving SKY TV in cyprus. In Fact at the moment there are representatives from SKY TV at the moment in south cyprus looking at ways to stop there sky signal being recieved in cyprus. That is from the horses mouth.

re msg 9 Now THERE's a person who CLEARLY doesn't know what they're talking about .. )) 1/ Don't read this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-12355022 NOTE.. it only effects EU sat based companies.. not those from Arab states 2/ SKY comes from FOUR different birds.. only one of which cannot be received in Cyprus - mainly free to view channels - not pay stuff.. Be very sure .. SKY sports stuff is on the strongest birds in HD ;) IF SKY were really interested in stopping non UK viewers they'd be on weaker birds.. Now.. if you are referring to folk going around pubs checking who's got pirate kit - THAT is a different matter.. and WHO says the 'men' checking are 'confined' to the 'south' ?????!!!!! ( Hint) they aren't from SKY... think agents from the PL ..

re msg 11 Manta 'They' don't know *your* box is in Cyprus - the nightmare scenario is if they ( the sat tv co. find out the wholesale source... not difficult as there are units in public locations that have been 'advertised' .. Yes, you'd be left with a useless box and on one to give you back your money... if in doubt - pay monthly in advance

Hi Manta, If you read our customer's comments in the thread that I supplied, you will see that we already have OSN customers in their 2nd year contracts who started off with us on smart cards, were converted to HD receivers last December and who then, have renewed their contracts on those HD receivers. We have been in business in TRNC for seven years and still have some of the original customers that we started with. No-one except us knows anything about the way we conduct our business, but it doesn't seem to stop some from maliciously speculating - fear mongering. I could do the same thing for example, if I were to warn people against signing up for a Digiturk TV package, just in case there is a settlement to the Cyprus problem and Digiturk is banned in a united Cyprus - silly I know, but still maliciously speculating with an ulterior motive. I can't predict the future, but I can point to the past and use that as an example of our professionalism and integrity. cont.

.......cont The current 12 month renewal price on the Premier Plus package is 398 Euros. Don't hesitate to ask more questions, we have nothing to hide. Regards Washerman

OK.. my final say on this thread.. Washerman, there's NOTHING 'wrong' with OSN / Abu Dhabi systems .. and they ONLY need a 1m dish... What I'd hoped for was some admission of the risk involved and what you'd do for clients if your grey market operation came under the spotlight and clients cards started getting turned off.. Simply stating it hasn't happened doesn't mean it won't.. As you know I'm suggesting it WILL happen..and I'll look an idiot if I'm wrong.. but when HAVE I been wrong re the sat tv biz... If you have SKY and ring up showing a Cyprus / TR tel number the operators are trained to ask where you are calling from and I've know folk get turned off.... Your operation is not sanctioned by the Arab sat TV companies and I note you have ( again) avoided their very own advice to clients..
