Went to HSBC to draw Sterling out today to then go and exchange into Lira, but the machine whilst letting me select English would not offer Sterling just Lira.

Have they stopped issuing Sterling? If so does any other bank let you get Sterling?

Maybe theres also something wrong with the HSBC atms - I went today and 2 kept telling me I had not enough in my account - put the fear of god into me, rushed home to get on the net to check my account in case someone had got into it - it was fine, there was some there! (Its an HSBC card too) There was sterling in one at about 11.15 as I got some with husbands card which is not an HSBC one!

Apart from HSBC, the Garanti Bank and TEB both offer sterling from their ATMs.

The Isbankasi in Kyrenia gives sterling but with all banks offering sterling, it may not be available always. Also only certain machines offer this service. For example, the Isbankasi in Nicosia may offer sterling but another branch may not.

I was at HSBC about 5pm today and the bank staff were just arriving to deal with reported errors with the ATM system.

Message 1 - I have been advised that it is cheaper just to draw out Lira as you pay atm charges and exchange charges if you take sterling. You should check it out depending on which bank card you are using !!

Message 9: most UK banks charge for using overseas cash machines. Nationwide, which used not to, do now charge for drawing foreign currency but the transactions are still free if sterling is drawn.

If you draw lira from a UK Sterling account you always get a poor exchange rate because it is that used by your UK bank. The advice has always been to exchange in Cyprus becaus of more favourable rates.

Personally, I draw Sterling from my UK account using the HSBC ATM and pay this into my local HSBC Sterling account. I then go home and transfer sterling to lira online because HSBC give a far better exchange rate online than they do over the counter.

As soon as Turkey joins the HSBC Global net I will do the whole thing online.

message 13, in 5 years of living here it has always been better to withdraw sterling and change locally to lira. The exception only being if you have a local bank account,I have Garanti and Hsbc ( turkey), where you can buy lira at even more favourable rates. UK banks will not offer you the same exchange rates available locally and never have done. I advise all our family visitors to bring sterling and change locally.
