Does anyone know of a palm tree expert who could come and advise us about our very large palm that looks in distress? Our neighbour has had a black beetle that has destroyed one of his palms and it looks as though the beetle has probably invaded our tree, too. Don't know where to go for best advice. Need a proper tree expert. Hate to lose our beautiful palm.

You probably have an infestation of palm beetle, it has been covered before on the forum. Think your only game plan is to immediately cut it down and burn it. Not an easy option but see if yon can find the previous postings http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/28200.asp

We had the same problem last year. Sadly, before we realised it was the red palm beetle and knew how to treat it we lost the palm and had to painstakingly dissect every single leaf to remove the beetles and kill them before they could fly and cause damage elsewhere! However we could hear activity in the other 4 palms where the beetles were hatching from their cocoons and slowly eating their way to the heart of the palm. With a lot of patience and hours and hours of spraying a highly toxic chemical into the base of every leaf we managed to save them. We have had activity in one of the palms again this year and noticed that the new leaves at the crown were dying but have again sprayed and fingers crossed, have just managed to save the palm. It is now sprouting new, green leaves. I cannot remember the name of the chemical but if you describe the problem to a garden centre they are fully aware of what you need. It is well worth the effort if you want to save the palm - Good luck
