My toilet cistern has stopped filling up. The cord has not broken, there doesn't appear to be a broken ball cock and it hasn't 'furred' up with limescale. Does anyone have any other ideas as to why it's not working before i shell out a fortune to a plumber (who may or not turn up)

Thanks in advance.

Hi DD

You could take the water feed pipe off at the wall or just under the cistern to check if the water is getting to there. If it is the inlet valve inside the cistern will be bunged up with calcium and stopping it working. Clean it with limescale remover.

Por Coz is great stuff, but treat it with care, and wear safety glasses, it is very strong acid, keep well away from kids, and pets

Make sure the ball cock hasn't jammed in the off position by moving it up and down.

Has your pump tripped out?

Turn the pump off at the wall switch for a few seconds and back on to reset it.

In my previous house, in the toilet cistern, there was a little tiny hook that would come away from something. When I had re-attached it, then the cistern would fill up again. If you get a man in to do it, stay with him and see what he is doing. It could be something like I had, really simple, that if it happens again, you can do it yourself.

There is a small plunger that works against the inlet valve seal, it is situated where the ball cock arm pivots against the inlet pipe. If you are unable to 'free off' the sliding plunger you may need to remove the ball valve unit buy unscrewing the nut which is sometimes just a notched ring using pipe grips/pliers/mole grips, it is then possible to either soak the valve in the solution you have, or take it apart and clean it. Turn the water off first at the wall tap by the toilet, if a tap is fitted there. Hope this info helps you.

Msg.1 DD. If you ask "pretty please" one of these lovely people who seem to have the answer to your problem, might just pop along and do it for you. Mg.9 How I do agree with you, what a refreshing change it is.

Well i have ascertained that it's not the 'in' pipe...i have also cleaned the actual cistern with Por Coz...still not filling up....

Looks like i shall have to do some dismantelling....only last time i took something apart...it never worked properly again!! Wish me luck....

ttAt the risk of stating he obvious, have you checked that the ball hasnt sprung a leak .T hey often do particularly at the neckwhere they fit onto the sprocket . Then it will fill with water, and sink and close off the flow, instead of floating.

Right.....i think i have sussed out what the problem is...the metal pipe in the cistern that carries the in flow of water to the ball must be blocked as no water is travelling through it...but i can't seem to be able to unscrew it...and i'm wondering if it's not meant to be unscrewed.....

turn feed off to the cistern then unscew from under the cistern. there will be a nut there unless of course it is the type where you cant get at it unless you remove the whole toilet. then slightrly more annoyingly difficult.

remember there will still be a little water in the cistern so have an old towel ready or a bowl ready to catch it.
