I am feeling sick to the pit of my stomach as I have just had the scariest moment of my life !!!! My beautiful, gorgeous 5 month old Rottweiler, in a freak accident, got caught up by his collar on my front gate !!! He is a King Rottie so already is nearly 40 kilos. He was in such a panic because he was being strangled that I could not release him. I could not lift him off or undo the collar. Thank god that Ted came to the rescue and as I held his weight he cut the collar off with a knife. This could have ended in tragedy !!! I can not even start to think what would have happened if I had popped out for even 5 minutes !!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ALL dog owners do NOT leave your dog unattended with their collar on !! I feel completely irresponsible AND stupid as I should have taken their collars off after this same accident happened to my dear friend only last month and sadly she lost her dog !!! All my dogs are now collar free and will never again wear them in the home !!!

Don't feel so bad, accidents happen and at least you managed to save him. I only let my pup have a paraband collar on unless we are walking, but my previous dog always had a collar on.

Choke chain type collars are the worst for this. Mine all wear a half choke but only when outside walking.

This happened to us when our dog was a puppy. It got caught on the catch to her cage. I had to hold on to her until my wife was able to cut through with scissors. Been looking for the collars that have an elasticated bit to allow the collar to come off.

You have to balance the risk of a collar getting snagged against the risk of the dog getting out and lost and running around without identification. My dogs wear collars all the time, because they have two discs - one regisration so if the Police do a cull (and it has happened) they will know the dog is legal and one with my name (but NOT address) and phone no. Also the black one has a reflective collar so he can be seen by drivers in the dark. Only once in over 30 years of owning dogs have I had probems releasing a collar in an emergency - and that was horrible. But on several occasions, despite great care, a dog has got out and gone walkabout. You can now get collars with a clip fastening which is easier to release than a buckle - but do make sure they work properly some are badly made and come undone when you dont want them to! A second the comment about choke chains - they should also be used when the dog is actually on the lead.
