Read an article on the 17th about a Turkish-Cypriot insisting he shouldn't be charged to use the beach (Shayna Beach Club - Catalkoy), that according to the kktc constitution everybody has a right to enter beaches in the kktc for free. According to the constitution a 100 meter strip of land from the sea belongs to the government and no-one may charge admission.

Where can one get a copy of the latest constitution? (apparently the TC was told that his copy was out of date).

I always thought a beach was free to go on

In any part of the world

And you only paid if you wanted the use of sunbeds and umbrellas

That was his point too as he just wanted to swim not use any sunbeds etc but they insisted he pay to go down the steps to the beach area.

this 'war' has been raging for a long time, and is in effect in the south as well. (or was, when I lived there). The argument from many of these 'owners' is that they have leased the bach from the government and it is 'theirs', overlooking as has been rightly said that the first part of the beach belongs to everyone.Escape Beach is a classsic and this was challenged last year, the year before etc, but.... I was spposed to be going to a meeting on the beach and had a heck of a job persuading them to let me in, in spite of the fact that I wasn't carrying a cosie or towel.

I think the owners feel that if you don't pay at the gate you will use the sunbeds for free and they will be cheated from a rightful income, but don't care thaat you are being cheated from your rightful inheritance - to use theh beach.

Involve the government if you will, but they have too many other 'wars' to rage. It would be good to 'win' but I don't think that anyone has a chance against the mighty owners of bi

(sorry) big beach establishments.

But what do the rest of you think? And how can one get this balanced after so many years of ownership . Escape beach has a turnstile, so I don't think they will be in aa hurry to back down on admission charges.

Clause 38 of TRNC constitution is quite clear.

quote:

(4) Ulusal güvenlik, kamu düzeni, kamu yararı, genel sağlık ve çevre korunması amacıyla yasa ile sınırlama konmadıkça, yurttaşların yüz metrelik kıyı şeridi içerisine girmesi kimse tarafından engellenemez ve giriş ücrete bağlı tutulamaz.

It does say citizens but that does not give anybody the right to charge a fee to aliens.

When we go to Magusa, we are never charged to go on the beaches (we have used 3 different venues, all with full facilities) but there is always someone there to collect your money and give you mattresses for the sunbeds if you wish to use them.

Shayna charges for the use of the sunbeds and brollies and we were assured that people who wanted to just go for a swim from the beach would not be charged, that was earlier this year, and I see they have started taking the money before you get on the beach whereas before you were charged once you were on the beach. As we always use the facilities anyway then it's not a problem paying the 7.5TL

You can use beaches in the South of France for free, Pampelonne near St Tropez being a prime example. You only pay to use the beach clubs.

Not only do they charge for the beach but no food or drink allowed, some places even search your bags. Now that is preposterous.

I dont so much mind paying a small fee for the use of toilets, changing rooms and showers and a clean beach - after all they have to be maintained. I rather resent paying for sun beds since I never use them but I suppose it is difficult to split the charge.

What I do object to it hotels and clubs monopolising beaches and charging "luxury" prices beyond the reach of most people for facilities they dont want.

What they should do though is follow the example of some hotels and restaurants which allow you a free swim if you eat or drink there. To avoid people who take advantage by sharing a bottle of water between four, they could accept the entrance ticket against the cost of drinks and food bought.
