Hi All

I need to know the procedure/possibility of driving on the south with a Turkish license. I have heard many different stories but not sure.

I am 1/2 Turkish so hold a kimlik card as well as a UK passport but only have a Turkish license. Is it possible to drive on the south with this and if so is there anything extra I need to provide as I have been informed by a friend that I'll need my parents marriage certificate and my TC birth certificate.

Any help greatly appreciated.

If you used your kimlik card and the white slip for ins/outs and kept quiet about having a UK passport, would they think that you were TC?

Turkish Cypriots can drive in the south on a TC licence but Brits can't.

İf you use your "kimlik" card to go through the police control on the Greek side, and show it IF ever asked by the police at the other end, then it should be no problem. Just don't flash your Brit Passport and TC driver's licence together and say you are a resident in the North...

Linda, you could go with someone else driving but they insist that Brits use a UK licence

Deniz1,

Your UK licence should expire when you reach the age of 70. You should be OK until then.

You never know, we might be recognised by then and be able to use TRNC d/l or the EU may have dealt with issues of racial descrimination.

rejela, if your talking about the pink UK credit card type licence, it has a ten year expiry due to the photo ID.

Just a bit of added info that I didn't realise until recently.

Yes European citizens must hold a valid licence of their home nation according to the g/c police.

Fortunately I have the paper old style licence!

The problem is, if you live outside the UK, you can't put a current address i.e. a TRNC address on it. This really defeats the object of driving in the South on a UK licence with an address 12 years out of date and no way of finding that person in the UK as they are here in good old TRNC!

Thats politics for you.

Chef99; "Yes European citizens must hold a valid licence of their home nation according to the g/c police. "

But the lad said he has a TRNC ID card - surely he can claim to be a TRNC citizen! That would mean he should be able to use his TRNC licence. If by any chance he is stopped by the Greek police on the other side then it will be at the discretion of the police stopping him. Should the police decide, albeit he is a TRNC citizen and holds a TRNC driving licence, that he has no right to drive in South, he will report him so! But should they go to court, there would be no case against the driver, because you cannot discriminate against or apply a different law based on ethnicity of the person (something that is also covered by EU rules I guess). They either accept TRNC licences for TRNC citizens or they don't!

If they accept KKTC d/licences for TC, surely they should do the same for Brits living in North. If they don't, that must contravene EU legislation. Or doesn't it apply to them!

My son who has a kimlik ( ID card) for KKTC can drive South using his KKTC d/l but I can't because I was born to a British mother and father.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your help.

So basically I can drive over there with TC license but just don't let them know I'm half English?

On this note then, do I need to register my kimlik card on the greek computer system as this is more that I have been told?

Cheers guys

My friend (Turkish with TRNC Kimlik and driving license) did not get Road Tax on the Greek side because he is not born on Cyprus. We had to turn back.
