(Not wishing to take the post about the 3 young men detained for rape in Famagusta off topic I thought a new post might be interesting.)

More custodial sentences are awarded in England and Wales than any other country in Europe. The prison population of E & W stands at an all time high (fast approaching 87,000).

Should more prisons be built and heftier sentencing guidelines be introduced by the Home Office for crimes of violence or should sentencing judges consider awarding more non custodial methods of punishment.

Given that the human rights of suspects and convicted criminals cannot breached by the Criminal Justice System, what about the rights of individual citizens. Should the citizen expect and deserve the CJS to protect his or her human rights?

I think redwine has a good and valid point however I do believe a prison should be built somewhere near Split in Croatia where all those brits who still seem to think North Cyprus is an extension of the UK.

Just a personal viewpoint.

re msg 1

Sadly, we appear to (temporarily) need more prison space... suggest a mothballed warship or a remote island ... no internet for few days might be more of a punishment than any prison sentence;)

Seriously, I'd like to see more community orders handed out and then prison if they're not adhered to.

Msg 3 I totally agree why write something about UK when we live here. Why do those that still live UK insist on coming on a TRNC forum to spout about something that we wanted to get away from. I couldn't care less if they built more prisons or shut them all down. Let's get this stupid thread closed and post more relvent topics related to TRNC not UK

Redwine thank you for your messages, is there no one in England and Wales or the UK that you care about enough to wish a better quality of life in an environment of less violent crime?

I too retired to North Cyprus for a better life like many here but I am not innured to the events of public disorder back in the UK and the distress and hardship they have caused to many very ordinary people. Hence my post.

I can't see the point of building new prisons when there must be so many ex army and RAF camps standing empty that could be utilised for the not so serious offenders.

There is also enough parade grounds on these old camps so offenders can start a bit of boot training and get a bit of discipline!

Start first deporting people who have committed a crime in the UK having been welcomed there 4 Russian lads just been sentenced to 35 years between them for raping a girl, they should have been sent straight back to Russia why should UK tax papyers pay for their keep in prison for so long.

No need to build more prisons, just turn the existing HOTELS back into PENAL establishments.

This is a really cheap alternative,

sell off the Computers, modern worshops, TVs, Duvets, carpets, electric kettles, Reduce the MENUS, cancel re-education, close down the Fitness Centres, central heating, Secure the visits areas, stop the flow of drugs into establishments, Job Done.

The figure of 87,000 would reduce rapidly to 50,000 in 5 years.

Spare the rod and spoil the child, a very old saying but in my opinion says it all about our society.

I am not suggesting in this instance Capital nor Corporal punishment, just plain old denial of freedom and reduction in rights whilst serving a sentence.

Oh and before I forget , with all this money the Gov't will have saved, return it to the older generation, give them the TVs, computers, duvets, carpets, FOOD !!! central heating !!!!!!!!!!

Rant Over

Msg 13 "...cancel re-education..." I totally disagree.

The prison population last year was 85,000. More than three quarters can't read, write or count to the standard expected of an 11-year-old. Inmates earn a few pounds a week for menial work. If, instead, they volunteer to learn to read and count and operate a computer, they are paid less!!!!!!! We are TRULY living in an insane world now, with idotic rules and regulations made up daily, by idiots. IF a person is educated, they have more chance of getting employment, supporting themselves and their families, and getting off the dole. Our education system is indefensible, again, ruined by intefering idiots. It is often marginalised, disaffected, illiterate, poverty stricken yobs who are at the core of riots and general mayhem, seething with resentment and jealousy that education would go far to address, imo!

Problem is as I see it, is that it costs society around £45,000 per year to keep them incarcerated.

So in effect the more you lock up- the more it costs.

We all know that we could stay in a 5 star hotel for that.

The reason is is down to staff costs, health care for the warders, and final salary pension schemes.

My answer is simple.

Offshore Island.

There are lots of unoccupied islands off the coast of the UK.

You put some Nissan huts on them(Modern term- Portacabins)

Air drop food, water , bottled gas and everything else you need for civilised life.

monitor the island using satellite, and heat seeking cameras.

then, let the B*****ds get on with it.

no staff required

huge saving.

and potentially , they might just get on, and realize to why society has rejected them.

My thoughts on this are the main problem in the UK with crime is drug related.

Start dealing with the root of the problem.

Just by building more jails that won't solve a thing.

As for the death penalty was that not something one of those racist political partys want to re introduce? Think that about sums up the mentality of anyone suggesting such a thing.
