Just buy a copy of Cyprus Today, it's all in there and you don't even have to be a quality person to read it.

Very sad and totally disgraceful what has been done to Mr. Daley.

I seem to remember a while ago that we were asked by the family and friends not to debate/post about this case although it is now behind Anthony and we wish him all best wishes, I still feel that a forum is not the place to continue posting with regards to the matter. JMHO.

I was so upset to read this in the paper this morning - deportation, who in their right mind after reading the evidence and how it happened could even give a prison sentence - I am disgusted with the whole system. Mind you I am sure he was happy to get out of the TRNC after what he has been put through, God bless him. Let us hope that where ever he decides to reside he will have a contented rest of his life.

the awful thought that occured to me (from the very beginning really) is 'there but for the grace of god go I.' It is something that could so easily happen to any of us out driving and it is frightening that suddenly one could become a criminal . But I do so hope that Mr Davey is moving on to far better things, and that maybe, JUST MAYBE, he will look back at this awful episode as being that which moved him on (albeit unwillingly) to a far better life than he might ever have expected. And that is my prayer for him!

Quarmby,

Surely that choice should still be made by Anthony?

Or are you in favour with the state making the decisions for you and people having absolutely no choice in the decision making process?

Anthony is a foreigner and sadly he had no choice. The TRNC is no longer a place where fairness rules.

Marion, why didn't they simply deport him before the prison sentence then? It would have given him the safety without the cruel, unjustified prison sentence.

Bradus, Quarmby may well be correct, the mentality of the TRNC authorities is to remove, in their eyes, the problem. With regards to the deportation of Mr. Davey, no, he had no choice in the decision making process and it would have always been on the cards that he would be deported to solve the issue that Quarmby is referring. You have to dig deep.

Bradus...message 31... why would they deport someone before they have served sentence. Regardless of the rights and wrongs in peoples opinions of this case, if someone is sentenced through a court, they serve the sentence before being deported, unless agreement is made that a person is deported to serve out that sentence in their own country.

Bradus until you have fallen foul of the TRNC authorities it is very difficult to comprehend their actions.

Sorry, I was trying to say that Anthony was not deported because of fears for his safety by a Government that cares (which is how it read) but because the Government can do what they want, to whom they want regardless of the legality of the action and with no consideration to human rights.

If I dig deep I would conclude that it was to avoid any further media attention or to meet the needs/requests of the family.

Bradus, well they can do exactly that, "do what they want, to whom they want regardless of the legality of the action", but human rights will not even enter the equation. However one interprets, whether its Quarmby's suggestion that it may be because fears for Mr Davey's safety or for any other reason, it is a problem or an issue that can be resolved by the TRNC authorities to remove that problem/issue.

By digging deep, I would conclude that the psyche of the authorities, in this case, the more senior in the Police force, would not want to be involved in a long dispute. Sorry to have to repeat, but better to remove the problem than have repercussions of an incorrect decision. I do not disagree with your conclusion either.

Unfortunately this policy of deportation after serving a prison sentence for foreigners (including Turkish nationals) has been in place for many years and is causing very severe injustices in some cases. It is so easy to apply such a policy with no discretion but the end result is inevitably disgraceful.

Without knowing the facts of the matter, because they are unavailable, most people seem to be of the opinion that this sad case is a shocking indictment of the TRNC 'legal' system.

One wonders if Mr. Davey might try to recoup some of the losses on his TRNC property by selling his story to the British Press.

If he does, it certainly won't improve the image of this place.

Even if people still choose to holiday here, they could well shun hiring a rental car for fear of the consequences that they might end up 'banged up' for months on end like Mr. Davey did.

Msg. 41, yes I'll remember cyclist every time I go behind the wheel of a car HOWEVER they should remember to (have their lights on) (don't ride tandem when on one seat) (don't wobble from side to side of the road, not paying attention to any other traffic) (remember that a car needs time to stop - they are usually too stupid to realise that fact) ...... the list goes on and on.

The reason I'm so cross about this is, a couple of evenings ago when driving along the Girne- Lapta road, a cyclist in all dark clothing, no reflectors on the cycle nor lights, suddenly swung out of a side road straight in front of me. How in Gods name I managed to avoid him I don't know. If there had been something coming the other way it would have been a case of either me ploughing into the cyclist or swerving and then driving headlong into the oncoming vehicle. Absolutely cretinous behaviour on behalf of the cyclist AND WHO WOULD HAVE GO THE BLAME ----ME

I seem to remember that he pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention (?) under advice from his brief. The judge cleared him of any fault for the accident itself but as he'd pleaded guilty and people had died accepted his plea of guilty to this lesser charge.

Any court decision of guilty for serious crime committed by non Cypriots seems to automatically mean deportation as part of the sentencing.

Because of the isolation of the TRNC it has no need or desire to accept other countries standards unless they work against their own interests. It's no wonder then that laws affecting human rights are not treated as a priority. Because if this isolation and the EU & UN having no influence on or input to an unrecognised state, they go their own way regardless. How can it be otherwise ?

I really wouldn't suggest to tourists that they hire a car or drive when visiting NC. If that message hits home, what price will the hire companies/TRNC economy pay?

If the judge did believe that Mr Davey was blameless the guilty plea should not have been accepted.

By all accounts, the deprivation of civilised justice combined with the horrific treatment and incarceration, culminating in deportation, that Mr. Davey was subjected to speaks volumes about TRNC's attitude towards EU citizens.

Knowing that he would be faced with a further [unspecified] long term of imprisonment, and again by all reports, he [allegedly] was badly advised [or cajoled?] to enter a guilty plea, apparently against the beliefs of his own conscience.

What a sigh of relief he must have gasped at the realisation that his ordeal was finally over when, presumably, he finally got to a hotel in the South and had a good, long bath and a decent meal!

'Scary' and 'sickening' are two apt words to describe this travesty.

I am sure Tony is glad to be leaving the TRNC after his ordeal. I met Tony before all this happened and he is a lovely man and cared for his wife full time after having an accident here who sadly then passed away. This accident could have happened to any of us and I would not wish the circumstances that he had to go through on anyone. I wish him the very best and I hope he can get on with his life again.
