This has been going on for some time now. There is no filter in the chimney, hence all the poisonous smoke which we have to breathe every day. I don't know which is worse, breathing that stuff or smoking ciggys, which I gave up nearly seven years ago. All I know I do have breathing problems when the chimney is belching out the filth. It was particularly bad yesterday around noon, and we live in Ozankoy.

Have a friend who works there, It is worse at the moment as they have all the generators going full time, even the backup ones, Apparently supplying power to the Greek side.

The yellow/brown streak above Girne is there most days now, They really need to sort out the filters.

How many times does the TRNC Government (TRNCG) have to repeat this, "we cannot afford the filters." Apparently, neither the EU nor Turkey will pay for them, so the pollution continues. Whilst I also live east of Girne, I do have options - leave or move. I guess others have similar choices available to them also. I doubt expats bemoaning the chimney rubbish from this site on C44 will alter the TRNCG attitude one jot. How many ministers live/work within its catchment area?

Even if they did, the funds/grant would [allegedly] likely be 'diverted' into the bulk purchase of yet more Porsche 'Cayennes', Range Rovers, Mercs & BMW's!!!

If all the government offices and hotels paid their electric bills, they would have enough money to buy new filters.

msg 6 - because the TRNCG/Kibtek do not have the funds, both the EU and Turkey were, apparently, asked for funding. It was refused - according to past reports in Cyprus Today. The EU does assist TRNCG with water projects et al.

I remember reading that Norway had complained to the Uk over the fallout from UK power stations causing acid and destroying rain forests in Norway

I hate to think what the brown sludge is doing to the environment

Yorguzlu;

I don't think the property prices have a bearing on the power station, after all TRNC leccy is bloody expensive assuming most expats pay their bills in full.

Seemingly something not done by 'locals'

Simple answer; A nuclear facililty in Mersin, sorted!

But we can't have that because the tree huggers don't like the idea.

Back to the coal mines, except for those poor guys in Wales.

Unfortunately the power station is old technology. Very old. This uses 1970's type 60MW oil fired boilers, & it is not practical or economic to retro-fit "filters" as people keep suggesting. Even the 660MW English powers stations at Littlebrook (Dartford crossing) & Isle of Grain do not have filters, & their plume is clearly visible when they are running too.

When Kibteks power station is running at maximum output the emissions are worse - a similar effect to a car diesel exhaust under full accelleration. A reduction in output to maybe 80% would reduce the particulates considerably but some would still remain. The yellowness in the plume is due to the sulphur in the fuel oil. Lower sulphur oils cost cosiderably more, & costs are obviously passed through to the consumer, who already complains about the high cost of electricity.

At least the TRNC can hold its head up high in trying to help the GC's through their power crisis.

I would be more worried about the health risks, especially to those living in very close proximity.

My point was that,the power station was there long before the houses were built around..........most didn't seem to notice or be bothered!

........or in fact,most didn't bother with anything,unlike the researches one does before buying in uk............ie.schools etc

ps.'cheap properties' is a part of a game called......................tit for tat.

I suspect the power station burns low grade heavy fuel oil, which must be kept at the correct temperture to burn correctly, also the set up of the burners on the boilers is vital to get a clean burn. I suspect there lays alot of the problem. Light fuel is a better option, but there is a large price increase.

Yorguzlu;

I watched the power station being built

It's what? 17 years old. Designed and built by Austrians and knackered already?

You are right about the housing nearby, a bit like buying near Heathrow and whining about the noise.
