hi there everybody

ive been asked in other posts to post words and sentances to people who want to learn turkish so i have started it of in a new thread

anyone who knows a word or two post ıt for people to learn make sure you write the turkish word or sentance then the translated english word or sentance below i have included the basics so here goes!!!!!



turksih pronunciation the letters below differ from the english pronunciation,

Aa similar to that in far - Ee as in bet - i as in pin - Oo as in note - ö like ur in burn - Uu as in blue - ü like ew in few - Cc like in jelly - ç like ch in chat - Gg hard g in get - ğ silent but lengthens the proceding vowel - Hh as in hen never silent - Jj like the s in pleasure - ş like sh in shape - V soft between v & w



Basics

Bay ~ Mr follows a first name - Bayan ~ Miss precedes first name - Hanim ~ Mrs follows first name polite and used a lot - Usta ~ means tradesman or craftsman follows first name



good morning~günaydin - good afternoon~iyi günler - good evening~iyi akşamlar - good night~iyi geceler - hello~merhaba - yes~evet - no~hayir - please~lütfen - thank you~sağol

no they did not teach you wrong

the word they meant is nasilsiniz which actually means how are you doing

where nasilsan means how are you

and ben tamamem translated means me ok

the way i have told you is mainland turkish (posh turkish)

and the way they have told you is cypriot turkish (slang)

in my eyes it is better to learn the correct way of saying words then once you have mastered it then you can adapt to the way cypriot turkish is spoken

when you say sağol iyiyim it is polite because you are saying im fine thank you

where ben tamamem is very blunt me/im ok



another example naber - what you up to (posh turkish)

napan - same meaning but more coarse (cypriot turkish)

Standard Turkish- spoken/written, the official language in Turkey and in the TRNC. The Turkish Cypriot language (dialect of Turkish) is a spoken language only and widely spoken in Cyprus (mainly in the TRNC). TCs vary as to which 'Turkish' they speak and tend to use both.

If its any help, efendi is normally used when answering the phone, especially a mobile.



Just out of interest which version of thank you do you consider to be the correct one as there appears to be two in use. I can't spell either but the one we've learnt is the longer one which locals always say (phonetic of course) "B Shade d" which I understand to mean "not at all". The Buzz book gives a shorter one something like tescular, and of course you can always use justs merci.

efendim means pardon (not pardon me) like when someone says something to you or even when you are answering the phone



the correct way of saying thank you in my view is teşekkür ederim, (translated means thank you from me)

teşekkürler is the same (means thank you) and a lot of people use this and is most common (i use all the time)

sağol translates simply thanks is also used a lot and more easy to say



teşekkür ederim = tesh-ek-ko ed-er-rim

teşekkürler = tesh-ek-ko-ler (roll the r)

sağol = sar-ol

depends how you want to tell this person a nice way of saying it but straight to the point is - beni rahatsiz etme lutfen translates to dont make me feel uncomfortable please

defol translates to go away (very direct and can be harsh depending on your tone)

or to just say fu.k off - siktir git

tapu kadastro dairesi means the deeds cadastral (survey of land) office

these are the offices that hand out your kocan/tapu deeds to you

I wonder whether you could recommend to Keith and I a good language course (books/cd etc.) to enable us to learn Turkish.



When we’re there we will try to find people that we can converse with but a course would be a good thing. Keith is very clever and has an excellent memory – me, not so hot! – so please consider something we call, “teaching for idiots”, although I do speak French beautifully!

also a good starter book is ilkogretim golden print basic words 'ingilizce - turkce sozluk' isbn number 9789754598643 you can prob order this from your local bookshop this book is aimed for children but great for people who are just starting out on thier turkish language journey i have a whole load more books i can reconmend but they are all at home im at work at the moment i can email you with these or ill post you

turkish self study course published by fono (best publishers for turkish lessons)

isbn number 9754711615 cost around 50pound this is also for starters

haki - rightfull



so basically its saying these deeds have been saved in the name of ...... it is found that that this person has a rightfull share or portion to these items



thats the simpleiest way of translating this

'language cards of turkish, for english speakers published by delta and the isbn number 9944417029 or 9789944417099 very good it consits of small cards it writes the english word then the turkish word and then how you would say it phonically im sure you can buy it any leaing bookstores

kaç para or ne kadar = how much money - how much and remember the ç sounds like ch



pahali or cok pahali = expensive - very expensive

Just to let you know that the Fono books are only available, Turkish to English but not English to Turkish - Keith found a linguaphone course and also Teach Yourself, beginners Turkish and Turkish - he will look to see which one is better and send the other one back.

some of the fono books (they have a big range here in turkey) are from turkish to english but you can get books the other way around cos my other half has a few english to turkish fono books and also the ones that are turksih to english the second half of the book is english to turkish what ill try and do is get the isbn number of these books for you

for a good linguaphone course the one i mentioned in message 21 is called turkish self study course published by fono and i saw in waterstones cost 50 pound and another one is the cards which i mentioned in message 31 and this is english to turkish picture and word association which i think is the best way of learning a second language

Everyone knows at least one turkish word -yogurt-



Yogurt is an ancient turkish product-> its name comes from turkish verb for "kneading" -> yogurmak



Although the product being turkish, Yogurt as eaten by turkish speaking people is unfortunately called greek yogurt out of Cyprus and Turkey getting all the praise for the Greeks.

bloddy greeks get to everything just the same as i mentioned in a ealier post about lokum its a turkish product made in afyon over a thousand years ago and is called turkish delight all over the world now the greeks have registerd it as greek delight and lokumi

same as shish kebab - shish meaning skewer

doner kebab - doner meaning to turn around

Thank you for sending this thread ukturk. It seems you have spent a lot of time trying to convey the Turkish Cypriot point of view of the Cyprus problem to our fellow expat community.



We could not until now manage to have our voice be heard around the world, but at least we should be able to explain ourselves to North Cyprus residents.

Well done mate, you have been working very hard to make our voice heard.Keep up the good work. If we all work this hard in support of our country, no doubt one day the dark days of embargoes will end.
