It was in error Hans and was actually my attempt to assist you but I had no idea it would operate within a thread post

Turtle: I don't know the code - the code became invisible in the post after Proger1 sent it. It's probably a very common piece of code, but I don't feel like looking it up.

Turtle, the information that I tried to send to Hans that he feels is simple but can't be bothered to look up was to assist his weather and currency sites because people have mentioned that they are not up to date, he has informed people to empty the cache which I presume most people wouldn't know what to do so I sent the code that could avoid this issue, unfortunately the coding of this forum does not obviously have the in built protection that others do to avoid html code operating in a text box.

Completely my fault for trying to be helpful but in my defence I would never expect what happened to be possible as it should only operate as a code inside the head sections of html coding

1 : If you - despite the warning in this thread - opened this thread

[ DON'T CLICK ON IT: ▶ http://www.cyprus44.com/forums/ ]

2 : and one or more pages keep jumping up and down on your screen

3 : and you can't leave said thread again

4 : then leave the C44 forum (sign out) and rejoin (sign in).

The problem on your computer should be gone.

Hans, the links to thread you are trying to be so helpful with don't work, they take you back to the forum home page.

I know you are trying to be helpful but I don't think you are, I tried to be helpful and caused the whole problem, let the mods fix it, please

The problem occured when I posted my addition to the thread Turtle, that was not 4 hours ago, it was about 25 minutes ago, it happens when a new post is added with no reflection on the original post

Would it be useful to alert people to the title of this post so that they can make sure they don't accidentally click on it from the forum list should they come across it. Or has it been closed? I didn't click on it so don't know it's status!

I attempted to be helpful to someone with no idea of what has happened even being possible but you don't care about that do you.

This really is not a big deal. Proger1 tried to display a html tag that automaticaly refreshes a webpage, however instead of it being displayed the forum actual executes it. You can see exatly what this html tag was by viewing source on the affected page. It is not that unusal for a forum to do this, often it is allowed so people can use html tags to format their post, putting things in different fonts sizes and colors and bold and the like. There are potential security issues but that all depends on exactly what html tags the forum allows and executes within posts. Most are harmless and benign, a few could potentialy be used to do nasty things, but it is possible that the forum only allows the non harmful ones. I could test this but I do not want to.

Well that is a very adult answer isn't it babydoll, perhaps it would be better for your feelings against me if you stopped breathing, I would have no issues with that solution.

Erolz, I do realise that there is no major issue but I felt guilty for making the error and tried my best to get it rectified, ironically, I was hoping it would be rectified before too much time was allowed for someone who might try to corrupt more than just one thread was able to realise my error.

Paul

In the least I would have thought that you would have had the decency to run it past the owner of the board before trying to implement the code.

To be honest proger1 I personaly do not feel you made an error. Whilst it is not unusal for a forum to allow certain html tags to be executed, refresh is not one I would expect to be executed within the body of a post. This is something Izzet needs to look at. Certainly if ANY html tag can be placed in a post AND it is executed rather than displayed as text then that is a serious potential security flaw of the forum. I do not know if this is the case or not and do not want to try it out becuase doing so would cause more disruption.

AJ all he did was send a post saying 'Hans try this HTML tag/code in your page', but instead of displaying the code the forum ran it. That was completly unexpected, so there is no way proger1 could have run it past the owners of the board. He had no idea it was going to be executed and not displayed. I could have easily have done the same thing with the best of itentions and with the same result.

@ msg 32, erolz: (...) He had no idea it was going to be executed and not displayed. (...)

▶ I accept that - it could have (although it should not have!) happened to other posters as well. But I don't understand why Proger1 kept writing on this board instead of writing one email in bulk to the moderators with his question to delete his post. Just for the record.

I did do that Hans, and I started another thread requesting it be deleted but I continued posting because I was asked questions and because I felt I needed to, why did you apologise and then take it on yourself to warn everyone about something harmless, we all get confused by other peoples actions.

I screwed up by accident, I did what I could to stop it getting worse. Regardless of how you wish me to act Hans, I get things wrong sometimes.

Turtle that is exactly what happened.

You can see the code for ANY web page by using the 'view source' option in most browsers. How 'iify' it is, is simply down to what html tags within a post the forums executes rather than displays. If it executes the html tags that allow for things like changing font size and color and setting paragrpahhs and the like then it is actualy a useful way for those who know html to format their posts. In this case it executed the refresh tag, which is annoying but not any risk to anyone. There are some html tags that if executed could cause realy problems but I do not know if the forum would execute these tags, like it did the refresh one or not and I am not going to experiment on a live public forum either.

proger1 I still think the forum is actualy more at fault than you are in this case. At worst you have highlighted a issue that izzet needs to look at and sort out.

The big problem is the software for this board is bespoke and as such will always have problems as has been seen previously with data base corruption due to unrecognized characters being posted. Which is why I had suggested that if anyone wants to muck around with HTML on the board then it should out of decency be run past the board owner and his programmer.

AJ, please stop trying to make it sound like I was attempting to do anything wrong.

I copied and pasted some text from a word document, it should have been handled as a text file and would be less harmful than any link that is put on here daily but it was interpreted by the bespoke software you have mentioned incorrectly.

Thank you for the support Erolz, I would totally understand if you had tried to make me look at fault as others have tried but I am very grateful you are not that type of person.

Paul

Where did I state in my last post that I thought you did anything wrong? Read it again, it was a general statement about the possible problems with the board software and that anyone that wants to muck around with HTML should run it pass the owner. If you read into it that I was accusing you of causing the problem then I apologize as it was not my intention.

Apology accepted and returned for my misunderstanding AJ, the fact that you stated mucking about with html seemed to be an accusation considering the decency comment in both of your posts.

Let's leave it there shall we, I made an error that should not have been possible but we know know was, Hans tried to be helpful and almost created panic for no reason, the mods were nowhere to be seen unfortunately and several misunderstandings occurred, oh and I can now confirm that if I ever find out who babydoll is I will be so sad to know they don't like me, as it is I am disliked by someone who hides there persona for no reason other than to irritate.

Apologies to all for ending the year with such conflict, I hope that everyone at least starts the New Year considering how others feel and do towards others as you would wish they would do for you.
