Don’t like something about you online? You’ll soon be able to delete it thanks to sweeping new EU privacy laws.

Firstly its a proposal, that even if accepted by all 27 members states, would not come into force for nearly 2 years (end of 2013) and even then EU law is suspended in the TRNC anyway so would not cover the cyprus44 site in most likelyhood.

So not quite the 'soon' the original post implies. Nor is it about deleting nline stuff about you you do not like, its about the right to have stuff YOU have written and posted to sites removed if you wish, not a right to have posts that OTHER PEOPLE have written about you removed. The later is already covered under exisiting defamation laws and is not an issue of privacy / data protection, which is what these proposed changes are about.

" millions of internet users will have the ‘right to be forgotten’ and order companies to erase all the data it has on them, according to new legislation announced by the European Commission yesterday. "

if the server is in a uk county or the site is registered there it would apply imho

metininkibris you need to seperate the mail's sensationalising from the facts. Try looking at what the actual EU press office for the Justice Commissioner says

"The data concerned will be everything an individual has given the companies themselves, including posts, uploaded songs and photos, Mina Andreeva, press officer for the Justice Commissioner, told MailOnline."

It is imo extremely unlikely that hosters of sites will have any liability for removing personal data that their customers collect should these proposals actualy come into effect at the end of 2013, simply because they do not have an ability to remove the data themselves. They can shut the site down, but that does not mean the data does not still exist within their clients own machines. The fact that hosters are liable for defamation on sites the hosters customers run is an entirely different senario to this one and one that has case law behind it.

Message 1 - Surely whatever legislation is brought in would apply to all forums and not just this one!!!!

Just to add website hosters have no liablilty atm in the UK for data their customers collect, it is only their customers who have such liabilites under all exisiting data protection regulation in the UK. Data protection is the responsibility of the company or person who collect it. There has never been a case in the UK where this liability has been extened from the company / person who collects the data, to a third company or person who provides web hosting for that company / person. Unless these new proposed changes, should they come into force, totaly overhaul the whole basis of data protection regualtion as far as it has existed to date in the UK, then the only person / company that would be required to meet these new requirments would be the Izzet / his company as he / it are based in the TRNC an area where EU law is suspended and thus the idea that these proposed changes would affect this forum is to me a seriously flawed one, imho.

With out wanting to detract from the thread title I would ask you Nige why I would be interested in a thread about Masons. As you will notice I have not posted on that thread and the reason is I know nothing about the thread subject. Rule no.1: do not post a thread or on a thread that you know nothing about the subject. But I guess that is the problem with daily mail readers, they believe what they read without doing further research.
