"Yusuf Kaçmaz" ? ... Herhalde kaçmış

Sorry I couldn't resist it - his surname means "doesn't run away" ... so I wrote "I guess he ran away " ... I guess it loses smthg in translation ... my TC Father-in-law at least thought it was funny

Hi Babyheritage ... on a more serious note, it might help you to read Geomin's message (#26) on this thread :

You should pay him a visit in his office in Nicosia. I know him from the days when he used to work in the tax office of Famagusta. He is an approachable chap.

The tax office is not far from parliament building. Prom parliament drive towards Kyrenia. turn left at the roundabout and there is a carpark on the left. Park your car there and the tax office is in that complex. Just ask anyone there.

The tax on rentals was 10%, I presume its the same. According zto the law you should pay it by the 15th of next month after you collect the rent. As long as you pay the tax on the rent say for January by 15th February there will be no questions asked. However if tou get December's rent in say February and you go to pay it in March there will be trouble. I am one of the very few who can get his way but most give in.

the other problem is that they will ask you for a copy of the rental agreement and of course it must be stamped to the tune of 5 per thousand. If you rent it for a couple of months no problem but if your agreement is for say five years, five years rent make a lot of stamp duty!!!I never submitted to them any rental agreement, only

ctd.

informed them because as far as the law is concerned I can have a verbal agreement. No written agreement, no tax is their approach. They will refuse to accept the tax without the written agreement. Not with me. I did my duty by offering to pay them the tax, so in the end they accepted it from me because they could not threaten me with court action.

So the law and practice do not always match up with tax office.

Good luck.

Hi Elko,

Babyheritage is coming from Girne, so forgive me Ismet ... but she might find these directions easier:

- When coming from Girne go straight over the Gönyeli roundabout and the smaller hospital roundabout.

- Go straight over the next two traffic-lighted junctions (Ortaköy and Dereboyu respectively)

- About 300 metres from the second traffic-lighted junction (the Dereboyu one), on your left you'll see the blue KK Turkcell advertisements of the Turkcell building/shop. Turn left immediately after that.

- After about 200 metres from the Turkcell building, there is a crossroads. On the corner of that crossroads, just before it, on the right is the tax office, of which Mr Kaçmaz is the director.

But as Ismet said, there's no shame in asking the way as you go - To this effect, you might like to have the words "Vergi Dairesi" (ie. tax office) written down on a piece of paper to show people.

If you have a navigation gadget or Google Earth on your computer here are the coordinates for the car park:

N35o 11' 8.3"; E33o 21' 27.7"
