I tried to obtain and Iphone thro Carphone Warehouse and direct thro O2 today and was ready to sign a contract to get the Iphone free....both the sales people said I had failed the credit scoring (something that has never happened to me in my life before and a little surprising as an ex Bank Manager who understands this credit scoring thing.) I was wondering if any others have experienced the same problem, Doess thisindicate that perhaps these companies are after more money for themselves there may be other reasons such as cashflow issues!!! Would we getthe depoist back if thr companies went down the tubes?? We have seen whats happened to Woolworths and a few others and even Chrysler appear to be struggling. I will not on principle ever pay a deposit on a mobile phone where I am locked into an 18 month contract so they can stuff it. (this was of course in the UK)

Rocky. Challenge their decision if you think your credit score us ok. You can send £2 off to experian and obtain your credit reference to check that you have no adverse on your file.

Yes thanx I realise I can challenge experian but I have never exereinced this before anywhere and wondered if there is a hiddenr agenda with perhaps O2 or Apple needing cash. If say half million subscribers put down a £100 thats a lot of dough £50mfor the company and .....if it goes belly up... where does the money go. Is this corporate greed?

The criteria for new Pay Monthly Contracts through all suppliers of mobile phones has been raised. Defaults on paying has risen to 20%. An acceptable risk used to be 5% but in the last year figures are escalating.

It is not nice to have to tell people they've failed the credit check. It is one of the nastier things customer have to be told and then usually have the customer go off on one at you.

Also the phone companies have been hit lately as their credit rating within the banking sector has collapsed and they are having to raise revenue through their subscribers. So they need to be more careful who gets a phone.

Pay as you go phones are the sector likely next to feel the pinch. Expect rises in call charges soon to pay for the bad debts of pay Monthly Customers who default, and since Europe has made tham cut charges on Data Traffic and Calls Internationally their revenue has taken another kick in the teeth.

their selection criteria must be too tight for me to be refused, they must have financial issues so which company will go under first then?

You may have more luck through the newspaper advert companies. Many have taken on people although they don't meet the high standards of some by giving the networks guarantees on payment.

Basically: You default, they pay. Then they chase you for payment, not the phone company.

Rocky, I have never heard of such a thing, they want your credit card info and they want a deposit? , sounds like a load of bull.

Thats the whole purpose of a credit card is that if you default or break the contract they will take what is the agreed amount from your credit card.

They cant have both or shouldn't .

Try a different company ( ps, there is no chance of Apple going belly, not with their popularity).

I have an Iphone , they are great, is it the 3G you would be getting? in the states they are $199 US.

I was in the states over christmas and we lost my wifes Iphone. twas my fault of course. On the return journey we called at MacDonalds for a coffee where we thought we had lost it and one of the staff at McDonalds had handed it in and they kept it for 10 days to see if it was claimed. Brilliant it still works but I cant get one !!!!

I wanted a £45 monthly contract which would have meant the Iphone 8g was free, But in spite of my excellent credit rating Carphone Wraehouse wanted an additional £150 deposit so I told them to get lost. I also tried O2 and thay also wanted a deposit of £100 again I told them what to do. I looked at the O2 internet site and thier requirements were unclear although there was wording in their T & C which implied they could take a further deposit of my credit card if they so desired. I found this unacceptablel and terminated my application. How many of us read the T & C when we decide we want something off the internet I dont normally but I dont trust the mobile phone providers and the networks anymore.

Whenever there is a lot of small print, it makes me more suspicious and I just dont even bother reading it, just forget about, there are so many clauses and conditions , taking your first born if you default.

Best thing I did, I bought an "unlocked" Iphone 8gig" online which can be used with any SIM card.

I use it in the US with T Mobile and then when I go to cyprus I put my Telsim card in and its fine.

Might be a bit pricey but worth it in the long run with NO CONTRACT..

I have just brought an I Phone 3GS from the UK which is on Orange Pay as u go..I would like to use it in TRNC with my Turkcell sim but I need to get it unblocked. I have heard some horror stories that you can mess it up if not done properly and you cant get updates and other things to function properly...I have looked at a few unlocking websites and i have heard that you can get it unlocked here too...not sure what to do...any advice would be much appreciated??
