Hi all,

I have just read the headline in Mals Cyprus free press that according to Cyprus Today 7/10/2009 there are plans to develop Esentepe Beach. As I have a home in this area, I would appreciate it, if someone could post the whole article on here for me to read. I am at present in the Uk and I only have the weekend version of the paper sent to me. Whilst I agree that the beach needs cleaning up, my concerns are with this plan, that it will no longer be a free beach but someone will take it over and start charging exhorbitant prices for using it. This has happened on many other parts of the coast in the TRNC and this practice ought to be stopped. The beach should be free for locals, tourists and foreign home owners alike and I hope the local Belediyia bare this mind.

Sorry - I don't get the Wednesday issue of CT but if there is anything in tomorrow's I will post it. We have had sole use of this beach a few times, even on Sundays, so currently they won't make a lot of money if they try to charge. Maybe they are trying to copy Tatlisu Belediyesi's arrangement which wouldn't be an entirely bad thing.

Hi all,

I am not sure if we are talking about the same beach. I am talking about the one with the concrete shell of a restaurant at the top, near the Antique bar and restaurant. I know there has been a digger on the beach opposite the Alkan holiday village but I think they are going to put in a small water sports facility there. I don't think they could build a hotel there!! There has been rumours about the Esentepe harbour being developed but they have been going for at least 2 years. There was also a rumour that they were starting to build the new marina at Crystal Bay in July but no sign of any work starting there either. I have heard that the coast road is going to be made in to a dual carraigeway in 2013 but as the Girne bypass is 5 years overdue, I wouldn't hold my breath on that either.

Sorry, haven't got the article anymore, but I believe you are talking about the beach opposite Alkan Holiday Village. (It's not the Estentepe Belediyesi beach.) He wants to make the beach nicer for his customers. A small section of this beach (which is pretty much all rock and stone) has been cleared and made into a small bay. It actually looks very nice and prior to this being done, you couldn't use this as a beach. I don't think the article mentioned he was intending to charge anyone for use of it.

I think that the work opposite Alkan Holiday Village has something to do with a rescue service just up the road

Butler - just got hold of Wednesday's CT. The beach referred to is the one opposite Alkan Holiday Village, not the Esentepe beach below the derelict restaurant. Phew!

Hi Eileen,

Thank you for taking the trouble to look this up for me. I am sure that firestarter posted a thread earlier in the year, which stated it was going to be a small water sports complex. I hope this is true, as every little helps when renting out ones property.

As well as 26 bungalows and a restaurant opposite the Civil Defence Org's leisure facilities Alkan Erdoga is now planning 5 further bungalows as well as a beach that will cost about £30K. He received government permission 3 years ago for the scheme.

Key points: 2 breakwaters already established; asked by the highways dept to install footbridge over road between Alkan Village and beach; environmentalists not happy because of damage to sand lilies but environmental protection dept said sand lilies are not endemic and could be found elsewhere so government usually gives permission for these projects.

So sounds like it's nothing to do with Civil Defence Org. just being built opposite and it is to provide beach facilities for Alkan's customers.

Hi all,

I was informed last week on good authority, that this stretch of road is going to be made dual carraigeway. I think this is why he will need the foot bridge. His properties are already very close to the road, so I don't think there will be much left of the beach buy the time they take another 9 metres of it for the road. He will obviously have been informed of this by the local authority and decided it is still worth it for his customers.

Unfortunately it will not be many peoples idea of heaven sitting next to a dual carraigeway. I personally cannot understand why they need a dual carraigeway, unless of course they think there is going to be lots of traffic to the ever elusive marina.

Hi...I was there last week, my house overlooks the beach......just past the Esentepe turnoff, ( coming from the golf course, there is Alksn Holiday village on the RHS of the main road. ( approx 400m )

Direct in front of this 2 jettys have / are being built...or they may be breakers....about 200m apart....in between these, the area has been completely cleared of rocks ( used to form the jettys ) and is now a beach area.....I used it last sat.....at the moment, the first 2m in the water, is small shingle, beyond that is sand, great sandy beach area, which I am told will have chargeable sunbeds for next summer.

Also, there may be long term plans for a prom, with shops, along the whole stretch ( from the Esentepe turnoff to just beyond the Holiday village ) and more beach area...the footbridge will link carparking / shops to the beach..hope this helps

How do these rumors get started ?? Duel carraigeway ?? They cant even finish the roads they have ,would like to know what your "good authority" is cant possibly see how they can do it on that stretch of road.

Between antique restaurant and the open shell is a field which has full planning permission for a five star resort, already approved.

The owner of the land and project was looking for investors.

Hi woody,

The local beledyia were down visiting our site the other day and we are opposite the pop inn. There is a stretch of green belt land in front of our site which we were interested in tidying up. We were told we could do this apart from 9 metres in from the existing road, as this is ear marked for a dual carraigeway to start in 2013. I agree this is laughable when the Girne bypass is 5 years overdue. However, please don't cast doubt on where my information came from, as it came from the people who would know.

Hi Butlers wife

Sorry but you have more chance of seeing Moses walk past the pop Inn with your deeds in his hand than seeing a dual carraigeway there by 2013

tbw was only stating where the information came from.

No need to knock the info' whether, in your opinion it is valid or not.

Not too sure about a dual carriageway, but vague talks about moving the road back a bit from it's current postion, to allow a bit more room "beachside".....how ever....rumour and talks are always about 10 -15 years from the truth in NC

And what would the more room on the "beachside" be used for, building more properties therefore spoiling the view even more.

Hi Cyprusairsoft,

Thank you for clearing this up for me, when I posted my original question, I hadn't realised it would cause so much debate. I would like to know more about this development but unfortunately you have opted to hide your email address. However, I will look forward to seeing the pics when everything is finalised. Will the old concrete shell be demolished?

Cyprusairsoft,I know who owns 2 donums adjacent to the shop units been built but on the other side of the track leading down to the beach/abandonded restaurant and he is building a supermarket,he's already got finance in place and work is due to start this year.Does your builder friend already know this?

Hi gooligan,

This gets even more confusing but if it is true about the supermarket, that is excellent news for all owners in that area as we need more local shops, instead of having to travel to catalkoy. I will look forward to this development for next year.

Hi cyprusairsoft,

You say your builder friend has permission to build a £450k villa on this site. Gooligan says his friend is building a supermarket next door. Now if I had £450k to spend on a villa, I sure wouldn't want it next door to a supermarket. We all know that £450k would build a huge villa in the TRNC, one that possibly would need staff to run it. Let me know if they require a butler.

Hi John,

A minimarket is fine, as long as it sells the essentials like bread, milk and water and it saves the trek up the hill to the village. There seems to be a row of small shops already built, with just the finishing off to do on this site, do you know if any of them have been taken? I do wonder how they will survive in the winter, when it gets quiet. There are not a lot of permenant residents around that area but more people seem to be just waiting to retire, so it could get busier in a few years time.

Cyprusairsoft,on the picture link you put (msg 34) the supermarket is due to be built (as you look towards the sea) just to the right of the track that leads to the beach at the very bottom of the picture where it is brown and patchy.Obviously now there are shop units to the left of the track as it is an old picture.Where are the villas going?

Tbw

You’re correct about waiting to retire. I have been waiting since I was born!

A couple of shops just down the road would be good but like you say it'll be tough trading over the winter months.

Good luck to them.

Hello Cyprusairsoft

As you have lots of usefull information, do you know if there are any plans for the beach? Will it still be open to the public & free or will the posh new pads have private sections to themselves?

Thanks

I thought all beaches were supposed to be free!! I can't see how this one will be able to stay open to the general public if you have to pass through a very upmarket estate to get to it. Can you tell me if they are going to demolish the old shell of a restaurant?

Hi Paul,

All beaches are supposed to be free. Some people charge for sun loungers and parasols etc. but the beach itself is free and if you refuse to pay these people who want to charge you, then they usually back down.

T.B.

Interesting point. We got ripped off recently at Diana beach,5ytl for a bed and 5ytl entrance fee.I assumed that the entrance fee was for the beach. The beach was filthy and the food was expensive and the choice was very limited.I suppose you learn by your mistakes and we will never go back there again,

The Old shell hotel is being ripped down

council have issued warnings for courting couples picnickers etc to keep from under the roof as large chunks are falling down and is dangerous.

The beach which is government owned will remain open to the public

there are several ways to the beach and no plans to charge

any further developments will keep you posted

i for one will be glad the shell is coming down as its a real eyesore and dangerous

Hi cyprusairsoft,

Thank you so much, I never thought when I posted this thread, it would attract so much interest.

Do you know roughly when work is due to commence?

Hi Newlad,

We went to the Diana beach when we visited last July and didnt stay, it was a rip off the prices they were charging.

The beach looked littered wth rubish.

It seems to have been re-named to The Savoy, not sure if it is now owned by the Savoy Hotel or in partnership with. Big sign on the frontage and no access in winter to walk along it.
