The beach clean for Alagadi has been set as Friday 4th June. Start time approx 9 - 9:30.

The time is provisionally 9 am onwards. I will post again if the time changes... but please put the date in your diaries...

Remember to bring gardening gloves if you have them as there is always some broken glass and sharps to contend with. A hat, some water and extra bin bags are also useful... oh and make sure you have suitable footwear... I hate it when somebody slices open their foot!

Turkcell have arranged some school presence, we are trying to get more.

Would be happy to come and help, but no transport at the moment. Will anyone be going from anywhere near the Pia Bella area that may be able to give me a lift?

Fully support your initiative and will try to be there if not working.

That said, I have to ask the question:

Why is it left to the expat community to take responsibility for cleaning up one of NC's premier tourist attractions ?

Surely the Beleyedesi should be throwing manpower at this task in order to get it ready for the tourist season.

Almost every week you read in Cyprus Today the concerns over dwindling tourist numbers and yet another 'initiative' by the govt to boost tourist trade. I am no expert, but surely investing in a concerted clean up of the major tourist attractions would be a good starter for ten !!

Just my opinion of course.

Paul, you are both right and wrong.

Let me explain... It is not left to the ex-pat community we get help from the Turtle Project, Turkcell and local schools.

Yes it would be nice if the local authorities were more pro-active in dealing with the problem but as they have no money for many worthwhile causes it's easy to see how (even if we think it should be) cleaning up the flotsam and jetsam that washes up on the beaches is not that high up the list of their priorities.

At least we can all take part in this and as the local school kids will be helping, maybe they will learn something from the exercise.

You are right and maybe expecting the beleyedesi to foot the bill is a bit much. However, tourism is a national industry and not a worthwhile cause, it is/was a significant contributor to NC's GDP. Maybe the decision should be made at a governmental level and government funds, rather than those of the municipality ringfenced to pay for a clean-up. There are also thousands of troops on this side of the island who seem to spend most of their time guarding inconspicuous bits of scrubland who could also be utilised

Spend a penny to make a pound springs to mind ??

Very best of luck with the clean up and hope to be there on the 4th.

Regards

OK everybody who is going to be here on 4th June please make your way to Alagadi Beach

Please note: the one with the beach bar NOT the first turning where the Goat Shed is.

As in years past I'm sure BRT will have their cameras in attendance to see what a fine job we make of collecting all the rubbish...

I'm doing my best to keep this up there! Sticky or no sticky....

Why not get the prison inmates out for a bit of fresh air and excercise (read: WORK!) - what happened to the good, old chain-gang?

Now now Groucho, the Pumas end of season ball is MUCH more important than a beach clean up ...........isn't it ?

Oh and their fixture against Bracknell RFC !! .....is equally as important !!................Back to the top !

I would suggest a title change to the thread so that people are a bit more aware of what it is about.

I was hoping that in making it a sticky Izzet would change it to read:

Sticky: Alagadi Turtle Beach Clean 4th June.

But obviously I was too hopeful...

Pipie

I would suggest that you post relevant to the thread title (and that includes everyone else) to keep it at the top. Any other postings outside of the thread topic now will end up getting this thread closed down.

People will look and post on this thread if they have an interest but what they do not want to read is arguments about whether it should be made a sticky or not. The thread title has been changed so please post with that in mind.

Hi all,

Great to see clean-up will take place on June 4th and that local school kids are involved (June 5th is annual World Environment Day). It would be great if local Belyedesi could be more proactive and clean-ups were more freequent, but resources are an issue. On the other hand we can all do something to make a difference. For every visit, if everyone picks up some litter, 2 or 3 pieces, particularly plastic and deposit in the bins in the car park it would make a huge difference.....!

So, Pipie, message 42, etc. etc.

I assume you'll be flying back for both the Apricot Festival and the Beach Clean? I only ask this because you consistently congratulate those who post (and there's nothing wrong with that) on these subjects, i.e. 'Thanks for the info, Groucho', etc. I have been following, out of interest, the TQB thread - I must say, it makes for interesting reading. Could I ask you also (and you certainly don't have to reply) why, whenever there is a post about a restaurant, supermarket, etc. you always ask 'where is it' or 'do you have an idea of prices' when, often, the location of the restaurant, supermarket or whatever, is clearly mentioned at the start of the post?

Do you post for the sake of it? Sorry, I have answered my own question.

Pipie - I would like to extend to you my utmost apologies here. I have not posted for a couple of days because I haven't felt too good. However, I should like to say 'sorry' for message 44 - it was uncalled for. Totally. I am not seeking to offer an excuse, apart from my weird state of mind, at times,, but would very much like to extend an apology.

I hope you can forgive me.
