See our post at link in msg 2. Ferry operator has axed Rosyth/Zeebrugge passenger service from December and we are now considering ferry Newcastle-Amsterdam then drive through Netherlands, Germany, Austria and into Italy. Then ferry Ancona-Cesme and through Turkey to Tasucu. Going next Spring, probably April. If anyone has taken this route fairly recently or can offer any guidance we would appreciate it. Also has anyone experience of taking animals (dogs/cats) on any of the ferries?

Have done the trip. All I can say to you is aviod Serbia at all costs. Check your green card and ensure it covers all countries you will be going through or it will cost a fortune and plan your stops as finding a hotel at a good cost is very hard. Dont forget to book the ferry to Cyprus.

GOOD LUCK you will need it.

We did the over land, Serbia was fine for us, no problems any where at all and it was a great adventure. If you need any info dont hesitate in asking.

We went ,germany, austria, slovenia, croatia, serbia, bulgaria, turkey.... we were very restricted for time, left Uk on Moday pm and arrived Cyprus Friday am....would advise to spend at least a week to 10 days exploring on the way down if you can..lots of lovely places to see.

Good luck, have fun.

We used the ferry from Ancona to Cesme, followed the coast road (well nearly) to Tasucu.

There where dogs on the Ancona ferry, the kennels where a bit small but clean, but as we came on the last ferry of the season and it was very quite they allowed the dogs to be kept in the cabins.

Don't know about the Tasuca ferry didn't see any dogs on our trip over.

There has been many stories about the ferry from Turkey to here and unfortunately most are all true,

not the best part of the trip. One thing to be aware of is often your car goes one boat and you go on another,

not sure what you will do about your dog if this happens to you.

I drove down in my Morris Traveller with dog arriving April, 2010.

I wanted to do it the easy way so I was going to motorail

Dusseldorf to Schwarzach St Veit £345

Vallach to Edirne £530

I missed the first motorail but they honoured my ticket on the 2nd even though I was 4 days late!!! So I probably missed the worst bit of the driving and lived very well in my own compartment (dog's can't share!!) The train food was pretty good. All the regulars boarded with huge food boxes!!

Customs at Edirne were horrific! They wouldn't let anyone go until the whole train had been cleared.

I hit a huge traffic jam at the Bosphorus bridge as 20 odd lanes funneled into what seemed like 3!! Most people seemed to have cards which allowed them to sail through.

The final hitch was the ferry to Girne - a law unto themselves!!

The car caused friendly amusement everywhere and noone was interested in the dog or his papers til Girne!

The dirve to italy and then to greece would be the best bet. Enjoy it and take it easy

We did this trip just over 2 years ago. Bought insurance in UK which covered all of EU countries. So we went England, France Belgium, Luxemborg, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece. Had to buy insurance in Turkey and TRNC.

Watch out in Austria. You must buy a VIGNETA at the German Austrian border. This is a road tax and costs 8 Euro. The crossing point was deserted when we drove through and we got stopped after 20 minutes and fined 150 Euro on the spot and given 2 days to leave the country. They even had a credit card swipe machine in the police car boot. You have now been warned.
